Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear !

I think the giveaway is who the director is.....Mr Shoot em up.

Alan Ayckbourn is the UK's most performed living playwright. His plays stand the test of time as is proved by the revival of THE NORMAN CONQUESTS. Apparently only William Shakespeare's plays are performed more often.

Therefore it is a great shame that one of this truly great writer's most acclaimed works is mauled to death in this extremely poor film. The plot is about an amateur stage production. It is somewhat of any irony that the film is amateur in its execution, performances, direction and even cinematography. Most definitely the worst film both Anthony Hopkins and Jeremy Irons have ever performed in. From this outing it is hard to believe that they are two of their generation's greatest practitioners.

Still the chapter makes interesting reading in Tony Earnshaw's book MADE IN YORKSHIRE....a pity the film does not live up to the package.

Awful...
Review date: 2008-09-22 Rating: 2 out of 10

I first saw this some years ago, and having just watched it for a second time, I thought either we change an awful lot over time, or I was well out of it back then...

For some reason, I had recalled this movie being hilarious - something about Prunella Scales and a pair of pants had stuck in my mind. Having sat through the first hour and nothing really happened (I was bored to death - and Tony Hopkins overplaying his part to an embarrassment did not help...) we finally reached the point of the pants and Prunella I'd remembered, and then I realised that I must have only ever seen the last half hour or so of this movie, and had assumed that the first hour back then that I'd missed must have been as good - how wrong I was... However, if you can manage to sit through the first hour of this awful and silly movie, you might think it worth the wait for these few funny scenes. Also, the credits rolling at the end whilst Jeremy Irons 'ponces' about like a lady's dress maker might appeal to some of your funny bones!
