Lynch at his best.
Review date: 2008-07-26 Rating: 10 out of 10

This film is by far the best that David Lynch has made; and I have seen ALL his films. Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Inland Empire etc. are all high quality films in their own right, but Mulholland Drive is easily one of the best films for creating a haunting and eerie atmosphere.

Yes, the film is confusing...very confusing. It is no surprise that some people gave this film 1 star, but I have a (strong) suspicion that the people who gave it 1 star are the type of people who like a story to be spoon-fed to them so they don't have to do any thinking...well that's not going to happen here!

You have to think for yourself with this film. You will have to watch it more than once; but the best bit is that you will *want* to watch it again because it is a great film packed full of great scenes and dialogue.

The "Club Silencio" scene is easily one the best bits of film to grace cinema; Richard Greens' performance as the MC is brilliant. It's haunting, intruiging...as well as central to the film.

A word must go to Angelo Badalamenti and the soundtrack he composed. Simple yet effective and very spin-tingling.

If you like a film to hold your hand all the way through and tell you exactly what is happening from start to finish then don't buy this film. It will be lost on you.

If, however, you want to be intruiged, fooled, made to think for yourself, want to witness some fantastic bits of cinema and you can appreciate the haunting atmosphere that Lynch has created, then this film is for you.

Don't be fooled by reviews with the words 'confusing' or 'boring' in them; those people can't appreciate the beauty & complexity of this film; hopefully you might be able to.

You have to be fairly intelligent to get this movie. What appears to be a straightforward chronological narrative is anything but. Our young ingenue "Betty" played brilliantly by Naomi Watts in her breakthrough role comes to Hollywood- on the back of winning a local Jitterbug contest -to make her fortune. Fame however is not that diffrent from infamy and after being seriously diverted by the femme fatale charms of a woman she finds naked in her shower, things for Betty go from bad to worse. Or do they???????? Lynch's attention to detail is excellent. All the supporting cast appear eccentric yet intriguing. Everyone has there own agenda and because the movie is loaded with metaphors he expects you to have one too- this isn't a sit back an let it wash over you kind of film!!
I thought the ending was spectacular, an it is one of my favourite films of all time. He also was very sussed as Naomi Watts is a consistantly brave and brilliant actress.

by far not his best

I didnt really enjoy this film simply because it had potential but the ending half hour just spoils it. I would say im a fan of david lynch, ive seen every episode of twin peaks, blue velvet, dune, Twin peaks: fire walk with me and the ever brilliant Eraserhead. This film is very much like a late M. Shamalayan night film, its seems to be going somewhere, the mystery grows, all the wierd pieces of the puzzle are about to come together.... and then a really bad twist in the story. Lynch with his last two films has been on low form like you would expect with any film maker but its almost as if he knows that he is one of the best hollywood surrealists and relies more on reputation than his ability in these films. The beauty of a great lynch film is having a simplistic plot as the soil but growing wierd and wonderful things, bizzare characters and social conversations that are just crazy. Unfortunatly this film seemed to be going in this direction but just stopped.

What, no, wait !!

Just finished watching this and what started off as a good film descended into farce

Impressionalist ? Symbolism ? Who knows and who cares !

This film won loads of awards but its hard to see why. It is pretentious in the extreme and if you are a lover of good films - Avoid this one !

If you have a choice between watching paint dry and this film , Bring on the Dulux !

'Mulholland Drive is a film about the death of dreams' Maximilian Le Cain.
First half of this movie had a in-depth plot which stopped making sense half way through. Most of the second half was full of conceptual nonsense, topped off with a weak ending.
Definitely one for mainstream viewers to avoid
