Great Show...missing an episode though!
Review date: 2008-03-26 Rating: 8 out of 10

I have to disagree with an earlier reviewer who complains that this series is on one disc and in a standard dvd case as opposed to the 3 earlier seasons. Firstly this is a different company releasing the later series on DVD and they are doing it CORRECTLY in as much as keeping costs down by fitting it onto 1 disk and not 2 or 3 episodes on each disk like the previous company...there was absolutely no need to do that and I can only presume it was done to make the package look bigger and justify the expensive price tag (they werent exactly cheap on initial release), you look at any other comedy release and its normal to have 6 or 7 episodes on the 1 disk.

Another MISTAKE the previous company made was to totally muck up the episodes on the season 2 and 3 sets so that season 2 also had most of season 3 on and season 3 had the last episodes of season 3 on and all of season 4...see my previous reviews on the early sets for more info. This is why theres no series 4 to buy on DVD, its already been released as the main body of the series 3 boxset!!!

Im glad then that this new company has made their products 1 Disk releases and although they look a bit odd (nothing major!) alongside the cardboard cases of the earlier seasons at least they kept the same colour scheme and typeface.

One gripe with this season 5 release though, it claims to be a complete series BUT the last episode is missing, its called APRILS FOOL (or APRIL FOOLS depending on what reference book/site you visit) and isnt on the DVD, and I havent a clue why...is it missing from the archives??? was it TOO controversial to release??? I think the company KNEW of its excistence because if you look at the back of the series 5 box it says "ALL SIX EPISODES OF SERIES 5 WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY BROADCAST IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH 1974 ARE INCLUDED IN THIS SET", that kind of covers there backs regarding a statement of completeness as the last episode was broadcast at the start of April. On the back of the series 6 DVD it says "ALL SEVEN EPISODES OF SERIES 6 ARE INCLUDED IN THIS SET", no mention of broadcast dates here because they dont need to cover themselves.

Finally, any fans should also seek out the DVD released in Australia (Region free product that will work on any DVD players) called LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR IN AUSTRALIA which was a similar series made after the British series ended, also starring Jack Smethurst, I presume an Australian Amazon site could supply it...or like me why not visit an Australian equivalent of a certain auction site.

Political correctness....Who cares, just have a good laugh
Review date: 2007-10-07 Rating: 10 out of 10

Sadly this program would most likely not be shown now due to this countries crazy political correctness. Watching it was like a breath of fresh air compared to the crap sterile stuff we have now, this was made when people did not have to watch every word that they said so as not to heaven forbid 'offend someone', this show is full of classic one liners, this is comedy at its best and like I have said it is like a breath of fresh air. A MUST BUY in my opinion.

Amazing Show but be warned!
Review date: 2007-07-17 Rating: 10 out of 10

I am a big fan of this show and I bought series 1, 2, 3 and also 4 without knowing.

Each of the first 3 DVD box sets are made and packaged using a cardboard sleeve encasing an inner DVD holder that can be unfolded to display the 4 DVDs of content.

Brilliant, 3 matching DVD box sets all made of cardboard. They look fantastic!

Now we get to series 5. Word on the street is that they have changed manufacturers and by hell does it show. If ever there was a cost cutting measure and reduction in quality this is it!

Instead of 4 DVDs we are reduced to just one. Instead of a cardboard sleeve with an expandable inner tray you get a bog standard, run of the mill, normal everyday single DVD plastic case. Round the outside is a normal printed paper sleeve just the same as you would get on any old DVD you bought from a shop out of the £1 bin.

There has been no effort put into the production of this DVD at all and as such it ruins the collection if you have the previous series in the cardboard holders. I hope they are going to rerelease series 1,2 and 3/4 in the new lower quality format so I can have a matching set. Series 5 breaks the old cardboard matching set.

Onto the DVD and its content.

These episodes are fantastic, nothing else needs to be said. The menus are excellent if somewhat bare, easy to navigate and each episode still has the Thames branding at the front! (That brings back memories).

If you watched this when it was first released and want to watch them again, BUY IT (and the first 4 series)! If you do not care about the politically correct legions and want a good laugh from start to finish this is the show for you. There are no DVD extras but this is not surprising for a show that is getting on for 40 years old.

If you want to continue your box set collection and have it match the others you will be sadly disappointed. This is a plastic packed DVD not a cardboard packed DVD like the previous 3 box sets.

That is the only negative I can think of. I will definitely buy series 6 when it is released in September though.
