Amazon.co.uk Review

Of all the spinoff TV incarnations of Star Trek, Deep Space Nine had the hardest job persuading an audience to watch. By all accounts, Gene Roddenberry had concerns about the idea before his death in 1991. It took two more years to develop, and when it finally aired in 1993 reasons for that concern were evident right away. The show was dark (literally), characters argued a lot, no one went anywhere, and the neighbouring natives were hardly ever friendly. Yet for all that the show went against the grain of the Great Bird's original vision of the future, it undeniably caught the mood of the time, incorporating a complex political backdrop that mirrored our own.

In the casting, there was a clear intent to differentiate the show from its predecessors. Genre stalwarts Tony Todd and James Earl Jones were considered for Commander Sisko before Avery Brooks. The one letdown at the time was that Michelle Forbes did not carry Ensign Ro across from The Next Generation, but when the explosive Nana Visitor defiantly slapped her hand on a console in the pilot episode, viewers knew they were in for a different crew dynamic. In fact, the two-part pilot show ("The Emissary") is largely responsible for DS9's early success. Mysterious, spiritual, claustrophobic, funny, and feisty, it remains the most attention-grabbing series opener (apart from the original series') the franchise has had. The first year may have relied on a few too many familiar faces--like Picard, Q, and Lwaxana Troi--but these were more than outweighed by refreshingly detailed explorations of cultures old and new (Trill, Bajoran, Cardassian, Ferengi). As it turned out, Deep Space Nine was the boldest venture into Roddenberry's galaxy that had been (or ever would be) seen. --Paul Tonks

Synopsis

In this first instalment of the Star Trek spin-off, Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), commander of the starship Deep Space Nine, discovers the first known stable wormhole--a virtual shortcut through space that leads from the Alpha Quadrant to the Gamma Quadrant on the other side of the galaxy. The Gamma Quadrant is governed by the Dominion, a group led by the Changelings--a group of shape shifters which counts DS9 crew member Odo (Rene Auberjonois) as one of its own. The Dominion has become a violent force in the galaxy, and the Deep Space Nine and its crew is the only hope of upholding the way of life established by the Federation. This collection includes all nineteen episodes from the first series.

DS9: Fantastic story-driven Sci Fi....
Review date: 2008-02-02 Rating: 10 out of 10

I've never been a *huge* Star Trek fan, not to say I didn't enjoy them, but I didn't sit down and watch them all religiously. The thing I didn't like about the other Star Treks is the lack of an on-going story, most of the espisodes were complete 'one offs' and I found it got boring after a while.

Deep Space 9 is where it all changes though, DS9 is a very well written, story driven Sci-Fi. The more you watch the less you'll want to stop, it shows many charecters from all sorts of races and how they interact with each other. It has an amazing number of twists and turns and the best thing of all, it isn't as 'twee' as the previous Star Treks. It shows Humans as, Humans. Not some sort of all-powerful ethical super-being - one other big reason I was never a huge fan of the other Star Treks.

This show has something for every one, even if you aren't a huge sci-fi fan I can assure you this is a good investment. Those of you who look a little more deeply into things will find DS9 even more gripping as it contains many subtle under-currents throughout the seasons which many will miss.

Each season has around 20 episodes, you can't go wrong for under £1 per episode!!

Best star trek show starts off ok...
Review date: 2007-11-01 Rating: 6 out of 10

STDS9 is the best of all the Star Trek shows in my opinion. It,s more ambitious than STNG and more intelligent than Voyager. No wishy-washy counselors or sexy borg-babes in sight; just well-rounded three-dimensional characters living in a real world where actions have consequences. To rewatch the first season of such a show is like watching
a beautiful flower before it blooms. You see the potential, but it's not all there yet. Odo, Bashir, Dax, Sisko, they somehow all look and act a little more as charicatures than in later years.
Still, a pretty good first season.

A Damp Squib

After thoroughly enjoying all the boxsets of Star Trek-Next Generation I was left with a bit of a hole to fill. Deep Space Nine's first season didn't fill it. Lacking depth and most importantly adventure. Everyone is harping on about the price of the boxsets and not the content. Maybe the later seasons are an improvement on this one, but do I take that risk?

Fantastic TV Series, But Still A Cynical Rip-Off
Review date: 2007-07-21 Rating: 8 out of 10

I love Star Trek in all its guises from the Original Star Trek series to Enterprise as well as the movies and owning them all on DVD is something i and I'm sure a great many other Trekies would like to do.

However all DVD retailers know this hence the original box sets of these series (Original Star Trek/Next Generation/Deep Space 9/Voyager/Enterprise) i have no doubt have been deliberately set at as high a price as they thought they could get away with. Now its phase two of the master plan and we have the gradual repacking of each spin-off in cheaper much more user/shelf friendly format and those who could not afford the original garish box sets are now snaping them up like hot cakes.
If u want my advice it is dont buy the originals just get the slimeline versions as here and for TNG and wait for the Original Series and Voyager to come out in slimline as well.

Buy it now the price is right

Well what can I say about DS9 you fans out there don't all ready know, in my opinion this is the best star trek series out of the lot, like "Mr. J. P. Day" said before me, all us star trek fans have been getting ripped paying between £55 and £85 per season and for what, a silly big box that takes up to much shelf space, believe me I know I collected all next generation at the silly high prices when they first came out, and have up to season 4 of voyager, if I had known they would relies these slim line editions I would of waited. On the first day I saw these I invested £100 which got me the first 4 DS9 sets, once I've colleted the rest, my next generation set is going on eBay so I can buy the slim lines because I like them better they take up less room and I want all my star trek collection to match, some may think this is silly for collectable reasons but I don't care about the value I just want the series, I will take "Mr. J. P. Day's" word that the special features are the same in both editions because they both have load of special feature that I never have or intend to watch I just want the program itself and then I will be happy, now I just have to wait for Voyager to be released in this style so I can re-collect them as well
