Exceptionally Dissapointing
Review date: 2008-05-29 Rating: 4 out of 10

This, as you can tell from the two stars, was not brilliant. From the rave reviews I had read I was expecting something that would leave some sort of palpable mark upon me, actually be affecting in some form, however the film essentially is rather dull. The only thing shocking about this is the violence, and then maybe the plot, primarily the violence is not particularily believable and the plot is not explained in the slightest.
Now usually this ould not bother me, an avid Lynch fan I am more than happy using the brain I was given, however there seemed to lack a great deal of coherency, the normal became the nonsensical. A grave emphasis on the nonsensical, since the imagery used just honestly seemed obvious and really rather silly. The whole emergence from the sea and returning plight reminded me of Stingray more than anything else.
One of the reviews I read stated this film was "stunning". That is just incorrect, the cinemography, especially tonally does not reflect the tone of the film in the slightest. I tried in vain to find some purpose for this but the cliniscism of the filming really did not do the plot any help. There was no atmosphere to the filming it was not gritty or intense, instead it seemed rather as if it had been filmed by someone on an expensive handheld camera, who was unwilling to be experimental.
Atmosphere was a major flaw, this was not down to the lack of speech, which instead of creating eiry suspense, of which there was none, decreased all characterisation to an uninspiring low. The music was dull, too quiet and again used to bad effect, strage techno new age rubbish playing during a rape scene. It all seemed Rather bland.
The acting was iffy, the lead at times really shone through, however at times was more wooden than a tree, all of the minor characters, especially in the final scene were uninspiring and dull.
For a film that was full of potential Savage seems to have created something which is rather uncreative a strangely dull, considering the subject matter. I wouldnt buy it if I were you.
