A Beautiful love story
Review date: 2008-08-11 Rating: 10 out of 10
A lot of people I know who saw the film were disappointed by it: "there's no action!" "he didn't use his powers" etc. The problem is people wanted a film based on the comics, where you have OTT villians and most of the film being a free for all.
I didn't have any expectations when I first saw the film, and therefore any opinion was based solely on what was presented. The first reaction is this is visually stunning! The essential way of gaining appreciation for this film is to watch it on blue ray. The picture quality is absolutely crystal clear.
Brandon Routh is Superman! There's so much pressure on him being his first film, and as Clark and particularly Superman, he was awesome. The rest of the cast, especially Kevin Spacy were also great. This film is about Superman being in the 21st Century, and his story of reintegration is beautifully told.

What Donner and Manckewicz Avoided in 1977 - OTT CampReview date: 2008-02-09 Rating: 2 out of 10Regardless of what the HD Quality is like...
This box office smash hit Turkey is big let down in the same vein as with the Star Wars prequels.
Bryan Singer's take on the Superhero franchise kills the whole return of Superman. Over reliance on CGI SFX and it's a flop IMHO faster than a speeding bullet!
Absolute campy ott nonsense, effects, and storyline. Terrible acting from most of the cast.
I'm sure Richard Donner and Tom Mankewicz who were the visualists on the 1977 filming of Superman The Movie and Superman II must have quietly cringed at the premiere of this, remenant of what Richard Lester done to Superman II when he took over Donner's work adding cheap effects, music and bad continuity. The Donner cut of that movie doesn't excel either at present in all fairness because himself and close team never got to finish Superman II so in that version you see a lot of probably tentative stuff in there. The Brando scenes excel given that they had been completely filmed.
Their fulfilled part of the saga was sucessful because they minimised the comic book cartoonishness for a serious, well acted and put together movie with pioneering special effects and a wonderful John Williams score. Credits also of course to Geoffrey Unsworth Cinematographer whom filmed also 'A Night To Remember' likewise John Barry Production Designer of Star Wars fame and Derek Meddings Miniature effects expert of James Bond fame, all of late whom were pioneers in their field.
