Synopsis
Though it's spawned a handful of sequels, it took more than 30 years for Tobe Hooper's ever-potent horror classic to get an origin story. Why is Leatherface so angry? Whose face does he wear as a mask? How did his family get their taste for human flesh? A 2003 remake revisited the original film, painted with post-millennial gloss by former music video director Marcus Nispel. For his second feature, director Jonathan Liebesman (DARKNESS FALLS) follows suit.
The film opens with the 1949 birth of the child who would become Leatherface--to an obese slaughterhouse worker. She dies during childbirth and the deformed baby is later found among refuse by his adoptive mother. Twenty years later, Chrissy (Jordana Brewster), Dean (Taylor Handley), Bailey (Doira Bird), and Eric (Matthew Bomer) are driving cross country. A run-in with some bikers leads to an intervention by crazed cannibal clan leader Hoyt (R.Lee Ermey), who has just killed the sheriff of the dwindling Texas town and taken on the mantle himself. The massacre is about to begin!

An unrelenting suspense and gore fest!!!Review date: 2008-05-13 Rating: 8 out of 10This is the first film I've ever seen in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre set of films, new or old, but I saw the trailer for this film and thought this could be a good film, I was wrong it's a horror/suspense film of the highest order.
This does remind me of the Australian film Wolf Creek in some ways, but as I love that film too then I've no problems with that, this film is based around actual events except for the fact that no chainsaw was used from what I've read about it.
R Lee Ermey as the "Sheriff" puts in a superb performance and for me is every bit as menacing as his son, probably more so.
This film grips you right from the start and holds you relentlessly for the next 90 minutes, there are 2 versions offered to you here, the version shown in the cinema (which I've not seen yet) or the uncut version, I've always loved these kinds of films, but some people may not be able to watch some parts, this is the most full on gore fest I've seen to date, a great film to watch in the dead of night (if you pardon the pun), if you can't watch Hostel then you'd almost certainly not be able to watch this either.
The only reason why I've not given this film 5 stars is that I have better films than this, but none of them are of this genre, otherwise this film gets the big thumbs up from me, watch it and see.Texas Chainsaw YawnfestReview date: 2008-03-26 Rating: 4 out of 10
Well, no disrespect to other reviewers but...huh?! Presumably, some of you have only seen the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and not the glorious original. You know, the one that pretty much defined the 70's horror genre and also, unintentionally, gave us Mary Whitehouse and the video nasties. But I digress. The reason I say all of that is because, well, what IS this film? Yes, the gore is often quite brutal but the film is really about nothing, with several glaring plot holes. I'm quite sure a normal family don't just become cannibals overnight. This film also sheds little light on how Leatherface came to be, nor his reasoning for being such a monster. Instead, we get a fairly long-winded story with throwaway lead characters, and some ample gore just in case we notice the lack of proper scripting. Suffice to say, I wasn't really fond of this film, nor did I have anything against it. It just angers me that casual horror fans believe this to be the most brutal film ever made. Wrong! In many ways, this film does a little tiny wee on the Chainsaw franchise, similar to how the fourth film in the original series did when they made Leatherface a full-scale tranny! God help us.ITS HOYT NOW!!!!Review date: 2008-02-24 Rating: 10 out of 10this movie is possibly my favourite horror movie, every character acts really well. Hoyt & Leatherface play amazing roles. if you wanna see the greatest horror film made, buy this, hell even if you dislike the horror genre, you should own this dvd.YAY! A true horror fans film!Review date: 2008-01-22 Rating: 10 out of 10I absolutely loved Marcus Nispel's remake of TCM and so I eagerly awaited the arrival of this one. I was not disappointed! It's truly horrific in places and it had me squirming and trying hard not to look away!
As you would expect, it follows 4 teens travelling through THAT hick town and yep, they have the misfortune of running into good ol' Sheriff Hoyt. (We actually get to see how he became Sheriff earlier on in the film.) As soon as they arrive at the home of the Hewitt's all hell breaks loose. There are some more classic one liners from Hoyt, delivered as only he can.
It shows us why Leatherface is so called and also why he's so darned angry. There are some pretty graphic scenes involving that infamous chainsaw and one of them must have been dreamed up by a pretty scary person! I refer to the one where Eric is nailed down to a table. If you've seen it, you'll know what I mean, if you haven't and are a good fan of gore and blood then you will be quite satisfied!
All in all, it's a great prequel. It could have been so much worse but this obviously fell into the right hands. Tobe Hooper should be proud. Buy this if you like lots of blood and guts and also if you like extreme tension and claustrophobia. Buy it especially if you enjoyed the Marcus Nispel remake of TCM, as they are made in the same vein.
