Product Description

The State Department wants Ethel Barrymore to represent the American theatre at an arts exposition in Paris. But Miss Ethel Barrymore's invitation goes instead to Miss Ethel "Dynamite" Jackson, a very blonde, very brassy chorus girl. And she's going to give Paris an Eiffel! Doris Day and Ray Bolger star in this musical bonbon highlighted by the Veron Duke / E.Y. Harbug title tune and a high-kicking, bell-ringing rendition of "I'm Gonna Ring The Bell Tonight". Day is pure TNT as Dynamite and Bolger's rubbery comic artistry ideally complements her. He's the beleagured bureaucrat who mismailed the Barrymore missive - and now has a stateroom full of Dynamite on his hands for a Paris-bound ocean voyage. If anyone can-can Dynamite can. And "April In Paris" is the time and place to join this frolicsome duo in their splendid springtime spree in Paree.

OK film. Bad transfer.
Review date: 2007-10-02 Rating: 4 out of 10

This edition of April in Paris is, as far as I can see, not available seperately. The disc here is from the DVD box "The Doris Day Anthology". It is not, as one should expect for an edition made by the original movie company, in any way restored. This seems to be a direct transfer of the British VHS edition from ca. 1990. The quality of the transfer is barely acceptable, even if it is watchable. This is indeed shameful. There are no extras, except for English subtitles, and they come in handy, as the sound is only a little bit better than the picture quality.

The move itself is definitely not one of Miss Days better efforts. The story is unbelievable and so is Ray Bolger as the romantic interest. He has not got the charm needed to make us believe that Miss Day would fall for him, being much older than she was at the time. He has, however, a fine solo dance number, and Doris Day also has a couple of good songs along the way, especially the classic title number.

This movie is not available in an American edition yet (October 2007), and I would suspect that when it is, it will be restored to its original visual beauty, typical of Warner Technicolor efforts of the period. Better wait.
