Amazon.co.uk Review

The tricky topic of interracial romance gets a sexy, charming, and unexpectedly realistic treatment in Something New. Kenya (Sanaa Lathan, Out of Time, Alien Vs. Predator), a successful accountant, gets set up on a blind date with Brian (Simon Baker, The Ring Two)--only to discover that he's white, leading her to cut the date short. At a party, Kenya admires the garden and gets introduced to the landscape architect: Brian. Thus begins a bumpy but increasingly sparky relationship, despite opposition from Kenya's friends and family, as well as Kenya and Brian's own internal resistance. Make no mistake, Something New is a mainstream romantic comedy, with ridiculously attractive people grappling with problems that get solved with just a little too much ease--but along the way, Kriss Turner's script, Sanaa Hamri's direction, and Baker's and especially Lathan's performances ground the movie in something resembling the real world. Kenya's and Brian's emotional terrain has a genuine texture to it; the rhythm of the dialogue and the visual pacing allows their characters to breathe and become more genuine and vivid than your standard rom-com lovers. The strong supporting cast--including Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Next Friday), and Blair Underwood (Full Frontal)--doesn't hurt. But Lathan owns the movie; this actress deserves true stardom. --Bret Fetzer

Not my favorite.

Watching the movie I really had to think what was the point of it. The story line was slow and not original and I would define it as drab. I was a little disturbed that a black woman could be defined as racist/prejudice for having a preference of a black male and that black couples have nothing to identify with apart from the issues within the work place. I found that somewhat insulting. Maybe it is a interracial/American thing but a one watch for me.

I rented this out and thought it was a brilliant and warm romantic story. Kenya is a very successful woman at the bank, she has got close friends and family but there is one thing missing-a man. So when she argees on a blind date and meets Brian, she quickly dismisses him as being white and wouldn't dare dating him. But as the movie goes on, she starts to fall for him even though that her brother has set her up with the perfect man she had been longing for before she met Brian. She must choose between the handsome man she has secret feelings for or the man she wanted all her life. I really enjoyed this, it was like a breath of air and didn't want to let go. Sanaa Lathen was brilliant as Kenya, you really feel and root for her to make that big desion. Simon Baker was hot and sexy as Brian, he is a perfect guy and the role suited him. Worth seeing, I totally enjoyed it.

This film is amazing!

a lot of black women will relate to this and i think this will give white women an insight into the issues there unfortunately are with inter-racial relationships. i enjoyed this a lot.

Wonderful film

I absolutely loved this and surprisingly so did my husband. He usually hates Rom-coms (and so do I) but this had an underlying message that was of interest to us. Sanaa Lathan plays a repressed and seriously successful professional woman who has to wrestle with her personal inhibitions about dating a white man as well as the perception from family and friends. The white man she falls in love with is beautifully charming, sincere and colour-blind and slowly she realises that love comes from the heart and not from what society, family or friends dictate.

The "will you won't they get it together" keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is a heart warming film with an important message and I certainly will be watching it again.
