I like it but...
Review date: 2007-09-28 Rating: 6 out of 10
I like watching this series, but it is a bit too far-fetched for my taste to believe that someone could travel all the way to the "Holy Lands" and back at that period in history in just a few weeks. Not to mention what he is supposed to have done there.. And Maid Marian's Kung-Fu + Tai-Chi skills are also quite ridiculous.
It's fun to watch, but you just gotta ignore the ridiculous parts, which are quite a few actually.

Refreshing!Review date: 2007-02-19 Rating: 10 out of 10I love this version of Robin Hood! They did an excellent job on the casting and who doesn't laugh at the funny remarks woven into the script: "I've shot the sheriff! No, you've shot the deputy!"? Two thumbs up. I can't wait for the next series to start! Once again--fantastic!Review date: 2007-01-29 Rating: 10 out of 10Yet another fascinating representation of the Robin Hood legend, continuing the story of our Robin played by Jonas Armstrong, and his relationship with his friends and enemies.
Compared with the first DVD, the acting is still at its best and overall it is a very well put together piece of television. A much darker set of episodes than the first, this DVD helps to piece the whole story together.
Episode 6 shows that the Merry Men are not as able as they would like to be, especially their leader, who shows considerable weakness.
Episode 7 is leading up to the climax in Episode 8 by Gisborne placing Marian under considerable duress, and is an important factor in the whole series.
Episode 8, especially, is a much darker Robin which is a brilliant contrast to his normal peace making ways, and presents a totally different view of what is assumed to be the hero of English folklore.
Episode 9 is, of course, just classic BBC Robin Hood.
The special features of this DVD are a profile of Gisborne, which is important due to what happens in this DVD.
The DVD has all the adult humour of before and the "swashbuckling" action for the children--once again, congratulations BBC.
Who's the Prince of Thieves Auntie Beeb?Review date: 2007-01-28 Rating: 2 out of 10Dear BBC directors, please believe us: The documentary-style wobbly-camera and frenetic editing which drew the audience into NYPD Blue has NOW BEEN DONE TO DEATH! Even if it weren't grossly irritating, it would still be intrusive and distracting in a programme set hundreds of years before the advent of TV documentaries. And by the way, the slow-motion flaming-arrow towards the camera has also been done before. I wonder who that makes the real prince of thieves around here!
Dear BBC costumers, what were you thinking when you dressed a Norman lord in a huge-lapelled snakeskin trenchcoat? Had you been watching Bladerunner?
Dear BBC props department, just because you HAVE a prop, does it follow you HAVE to use it? To make poor Robin Hood stand there in front of an ex-soldier and explain to experienced poachers that his funny little foreign bow is superior to the English longbow the legend tells of was simply hysterical.
Dear BBC writers, please stop patronising us. Your efforts at allegory were doubtless well-meant; but they were transparently written and ham-fistedly executed. (eg: War on Terror, Avian Flu, Weapons of Mass Destruction, etc) The inclusion in the "Merry Men" of a token gay and token black female was also intrusively done.
Dear BBC casting directors, congratulations on (1) bucking the trend by NOT giving us silicone-breasted actresses and washboard-stomached actors, (2) thinking of Keith Allen as th Sheriff - inspired, but kick your script-editors (see below), and (3) bucking another trend by actually having "the beautiful Maid Marian" played by a pretty actress. But although this was refreshing, it's unfortunate that in publicity stills she looks like a pouting chav on the receiving end of an ASBO.
Dear BBC script-editors, have you no sense of time and place? OK, so we wouldn't be able to follow it if the cast all spoke in middle English, but it would be nice if you were sensitive to the more glaringly anachronistic turns of phrase.
Dear BBC stylists and makeup artists: Same message really. In a few years, it will be possible to point at the hairdos in this programme identify the year of FILMING rather than the time the thing was set in. And were the women of Norman Britain really caked in so much blusher, mascara and eye-shadow?
You know, I really love Robon Hood. I've been a devoted fan of every film and TV version to date. For this reason alone, I watched this programme to he bitter end. And for this reason alone I found one of the programme's silliest aspects to be one of my favourites! When I think "Robin Hood" I think "master of the bow and arrow". So while I groaned when Robin knocked two enemies from a high wall by precision-throwing of a huge sword, I was happy to accept his Uzi-style archery. Cool!
