"They passed down all the roads long ago. And the Red Bull ran behind them, and covered their footsteps..."
Review date: 2008-08-12 Rating: 8 out of 10
When I was about 5 I saw this on TV and have loved it ever since. We had it recorded on video but was chucked away. It took me years to track it down again but once I had, I was so happy and relived so many of the things I loved about this classic.
The story is that of a unicorn who overhears men talking about her being the last of her kind, disbelieving this, the unicorn goes on a quest to find others like herself. Along the way she is captured by a witch and meets Schmendrick the Magician, as well as Molly Grue, Prince Lir, King Haggard and The Red Bull.
This was made in the early '80's on a low budget, therefore the animation is not what you would expect from a Disney or Dreamworks animation but is still fantastic and will capture your imagination.
I for one, never looked at the sea the same way again, since I first watched this film!

I used to drive relatives loopy watching it but I adore the story, it has everything that makes a good fairy tale; a scary villan, magic spells and of course fantasy creatures like the unicorn. I recently bought it on DVD and watching it again (as a grown up!) you pick up on lots of little things you never would've noticed when you were wee! It looks a bit dated now of course, the animation styles and things are very 80s, but to me that's half the charm of something enjoyed when small and still enjoyable now!
