I have not seen this particular World War Two theatre of operations commemorated in any other film, play or novel.
Previously in films merchant vessels are depicted as being sunk in transit or sailing unscathed to their destinations.
This film depicts the plight of those crippled vessels that are ' dead in the water ' but nevertheless capable of blowing to ' kingdom come ' any U boat foolish enough to venture within range of their intact defensive armament.
William Holden and Oscar Homolka need to be singled out for particular merit. Homolka playing the character who enjoys ' the luck of the Irish ' and Holden that of the doomed hero.
The film builds to a stupendous climax. Prior to this the scene in which Holden is assigned his latest ' duck ' ( The euphemistic term for vessels described above which need to be towed to safety ) and hears it continuously wireless telegraphing a distress signal is suspenseful.
For whatever reason the ' duck's ' radio receiver is unserviceable. Therefore it is unable to hear the response from allied radio stations. In continuing to send signals it is clearly defining its position to other axis vessels and aircraft who can leisurely lay in wait for the rescue vessel. Commanded by Holden.
This is illustrated upon his face when he enquires to know several times for what length of time the ' duck ' has been signalling.
Not every body's ' cup of tea ' perhaps, but I enjoyed it and look forward to it being made available.
