Bang On!
Review date: 2008-09-10 Rating: 10 out of 10

These splendid DVDs feature films from Terry's 'golden age' when he was at the peak of his powers and working with a fine ensemble of British character actors. Not only are the films (which here are good quality prints) very funny in their own right (with some sharp little satires about British life, and class, during the postwar era) but also T-T is hilarious as a succession of rascals, rogues and snobbish shirkers. If you love British comedy you'll adore this set.

AN ABSOLUTE BOUNDER!
Review date: 2008-08-23 Rating: 10 out of 10

Terry-Thomas was born Thomas Terry Hoar Stevens, and originally his professional name was Thomas Terry; but people kept asking him if he was related to the stage actress Ellen Terry, so he decided to change his name once more to Terry-Thomas. Apparently, he said that the hyphen represented the gap in his teeth.
I confess that I bought this collection because it includes 'School For Scoundrels' in a widescreen format, and, of course, because I like Terry-Thomas and Ian Carmichael. Effectively, what you have here is 3 Terry-Thomas films and 3 Ian Carmichael films in two of which T-T has a prominent role and in the third ( 'Brothers In Law' ) a featured role which lasts for around 10 minutes.
I have never really thought of Terry-Thomas as a leading man, but rather a brilliant character actor the likes of whom, along with many of his contemporaries, you will never see again.
I recommend this collection wholeheartedly, and I applaud Optimum for bringing out such excellent prints of these wonderful films.
For the record, 'His And Hers', which was made in 1960 and indeed starred Terry-Thomas, is not in this collection as stated, but 'Brothers In Law' is.

Good show!
Review date: 2008-08-20 Rating: 10 out of 10

If you like your old British comedies then you really need to have this 6-disc box-set in your collection. For under £20 you get 6 of the funniest films featuring the classic British bounder, Terry Thomas.

I really enjoyed each one and rank them in the following order:

Too Many Crooks (10/10)
The Naked Truth (9/10)
School for Scoundrels (9/10)
Make Mine Mink (8/10)
Brothers in Law (8/10)
Private's Progress (8/10)

note: 'His and Hers' is NOT in this box-set.

Each film has Thomas playing his usual upper-class gentleman of disrepute with great support from a number of famous names from that time. These include Ian Carmichael, Peter Sellars, George Cole (Arthur Daley to many) and Alastair Sim, and 'Carry-On' stars Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Hattie Jacques and Bernard Bresslaw. You won't find such an array of British comic-acting talent in any other DVD collection.

Do I recommend it highly? Rather!
