Romeo, heir of the lordly Montague family of Verona, falls in love with Juliet Capulet at a masked ball, not realising she is the daughter of their family's bitter rivals. Secretly married, they have only their love with which to confront their families' ancient quarrels. One of the most faithful and distinctive versions of Shakespeare's play on film, this BBC version also boasts a star cast with John Gielgud in the role of the Chorus.
