Gentle British comedy at its best

Watching this for the first time since its TV run, I found it hard to believe that it dates only from the mid-90's. Its gentle humor.. the infantile stupidity of it's stars played out with such obvious and effortless delight by Jasper Carrot and Robert Powell...the jokes that only 12 years ago were classic examples of the endearing British ability to laugh at human foilables and yet now leave you open mouthed and thinking 'how on Earth did they get away with that?'.
Every episode in this series is vintage British comedy full of laugh out loud one liners. One exchange had me in tears - Powell, after trying to impress the 6th form girls in a posh boarding school with an over the top Sherlock Holmes routine ('there's nothing wrong with a spring-autumn relationship') is quickly brought down to earth by Carrot : 'You're not Autumn. You're more like Boxing Day - short, fat and hung over!'.
The DVD also contains a terrific christmas special - 'Thicker than Water'. It can only be hoped that the BBC might yet tempt the boys to make one more, though any return would truly miss the sadly departed George Sewell. For it's his gentle and understated exasperation at the buffoonary of his two Detectives that caps this quite wonderful comedy series.

A side splittingly funny series !

I was delighted when I learned that 2Entertain were releasing the first series of The Detectives, which was closely followed by series 2 and 3.
This series is just as well written, acted and funny as I remember it from the mid nineties. Series 4 is perhaps my favourite of all - and I was delighted to find that the 1995 Christmas special episode Thicker Than Water was included on this disc. This Christmas episode is brilliant - will fantastic one liners, superb acting but also a deep underlying theme - you cannot help but feel sorry for the loneliness of Bob and Dave as Christmas approaches. But when they decide to spend Christmas day together and get a one legged turkey and 76 cans of lager the laughs start again!
Also included on this disc are the Fur Coat and No Knickers episode which is just so funny it makes you cry! And the one liner from the episode with the 400 year old turtle about it's active love life at that age - "sounds like Joanna Lumley!" is a true classic!
Highly recommended to all - even if you have not bought the previous 3 series give this one a try - you'll not be disappointed!
