Product Description
The Cartoons of Ronald Searle combine with the music of Gilbert and Sullivan to provide humerous action packed entertainment for the whole family.
Able Seaman Dick Deadeye is charged by Queen Victoria to find the stolen Ultimate Secret. His ugliness means that his life has always been lonely but a buxom barmaid takes a shine to him. Together, they battle pirates and an evil magician before discovering that the Ultimate Secret is nothing but LOVE! Using songs based on the original works of Gilbert and Sullivan (but updated with modern lyrics), this film was created to commemorate the centenary anniversary of the first collaboration of the composers of the Savoy Operas.

This movie deserves a release on DVD - even budget DVD. Based on the drawings of Ronald Searle (creator of the girls of St Trinians and the immortal Nigel Molesworth as any fule kno) and the superb music of Sir Arthur Sullivan (although Gilbert might blanch at the modern lyrics) it tells a simple tale of an Able if somewhat misshapen and misunderstood Seaman, Dick Deadeye (who is a nobler fellow than one might think from HMS Pinafore)
Working to the elaborate style of Searle must have been hell for the animators but they make a good job of it with lively and vivacious characterisations. The singing is good even if the lyrics are somewhat... one has to love Buttercups song in the revised edition... and the dialogue is good too... "I've found the secret, but lost me loove!*Duty Calls* says a voice from aboove"
There is a hardback illustrated book with the main drawings and lyrics from the film available and this too is a delight. So why didn't this film become a cult hit?
Can't say. Perhaps the updated action is too much of its own time (1075) to catch on.
It's worth a look at even now, though...
perhaps someone will put it onto DVD for the 21st Century.
