Synopsis

The popular sci-fi television series MUTANT X stars John Shea as scientist Adam Kane, the leader of a group of humans who have acquired amazing and deadly powers after being used as unwitting guinea pigs for a corporation's secret genetic experiment. As part of Adam's Mutant X team, the animalistic Shalimar (Victoria Pratt), shapeshifting Jesse (Forbes March), electrically-charged Brennan (Victor Webster), and light-bending new member Lexa Pierce (Karen Cliche) dedicate themselves to using their powers for secret crime-fighting missions while trying to stop the experiment's mastermind--and Adam's former partner--Mason Eckhart (Tom McCamus) from using the project for nefarious ends. This collection includes all 22 episodes from MUTANT X's third series.

Going out with a bang
Review date: 2008-05-31 Rating: 8 out of 10

Having really enjoyed a large number of episodes from the first season, I think I was probably overly generous grading the second season of `Mutant-X'. I still enjoyed watching the familiar band of superheroes battle evil government agencies and other rogue mutants like themselves, but I don't think the quality of stories was there often enough to deserve much praise.

The third season unfortunately continues that trend- the episodes are in fact even less well-plotted and engrossing than the best that the second season had to offer. Two main characters are lost as the series opens and the show suffers greatly as a result, the actors struggle to recover the successful dynamic of the previous two seasons, the stories are derivative and it's once addictive-viewing quality fades to a distant memory. So I was about ready to write-off this final season of `Mutant-X' when all of a sudden it goes and gets great again! Enough to make me wish that the third season wasn't the last, but alas...

The quality of stories picks up gradually with episode 7- `The Hand of God' (7/10), an action-oriented story that pits Shalimar against another member of her own kind, which is always a guaranteed winner. Episode 9- `No Exit' (7/10) has a solid plot with enjoyable results. Then episode 12- `Conspiracy Theory' (8/10), clearly inspired by the `X-Files', but played with just the right amount tongue-in-cheek humour by the cast comes along with some great plot twists, even to rival those of the genre it parodies. But episode 13- `Art of Attraction' (10/10) is the real turning point. Finally new girl Lexa gets a fantastic episode that revolves around her character- it's got the best development yet of the season's larger story-arc, it's got action, it's got mutant powers galore, it's got romance, suspense, twists, turns and more! From then on the episodes remain solid, although with few stand-out examples.

One last word about this season's larger story-arc, which revolves around a shady group know as `The Dominion' who take over from Genomex as the latest government-funded body with a suspect philosophy and deadly influence. Not just their name is a cliché- viewers will recognise this concept from at least a handful of other television shows (`Nikita', `X-Files' and `Alias' to name but a few), but once it gets going it really is pretty gripping, yes the moves are a bit familiar, but when the episodes are paced so well (which gets to be the case about half-way through the season) then there isn't much time to nit-pick. The final episode, 22- `The Assault' (8/10) is the culmination of the season, but not of the characters or the main story-arc, there's enough closure to satisfy, but it's still a shame things had to end there.
