Amazon.co.uk Review
You don't have to be a munchie-loving stoner or an aspiring rock god to enjoy Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, but it helps. A dozen years after they introduced their mock-rock power duo on the Los Angeles club scene, Jack Black and Kyle Gass finally got the movie showcase (a partial spinoff from the D's short-lived HBO series) their fans had been waiting for, and it's a rockin' romp with plenty of crude laughs that will hit home for anyone who's ever played air guitar to Meat Loaf's "Bat out of Hell." It's a Beavis and Butt-head-like origin story, recalling the legend (ahem) of how JB (Black) and KG (Gass) met, bonded over bong-hits and rock-operatic guitar licks, then set out (on a tip from a crazed guitar-store clerk played by Ben Stiller) to find the mythic pick of destiny, used by all guitar gods and said to be fashioned from the tooth of Satan. Their quest includes a variety of well-cast cameos (including Tim Robbins, Meat Loaf, and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl as Satan himself), and there's plenty of flatulence, drug humour, at least one hilarious fantasy sequence, and outrageous sight gags too numerous to mention. Suffice it to say, it's about 90 minutes of lowbrow indulgence, and some of the jokes fall flat, but if you're a headbanger at heart, you'll know what Tenacious D is riffing on, and the sweet licks will sound that much sweeter. If you're not ready to RAWK, this potential cult favorite may not be for you... but give it try anyway. It may not be better than Citizen Kane, but if you're properly stoked, it comes close to rock & roll heaven. --Jeff Shannon

A certain sense of humourReview date: 2008-08-27 Rating: 10 out of 10You need a certain sense of humour to truly get the best out of this film, therefore its natural that it won't appeal to everybody - some people will find it crude and non-sensical others will appreciate that this is precisely what makes it funny. Before you buy though you should ask yourself 'do I get surreal comedy?' if yes you'll probably love this, Mighty Boosh is a good tester.
A films plot should reflect the nature of the film and on that basis there can be no criticisms of the plot, it reflects the film to a T - find a guitar pick fashioned out of the devils tooth so you can win an open mic contest so you can pay $200 rent - obscure and funny. The non-sense of the script also really exploits Jack Black's qualities i.e his non-sense, its the obscurity and randomness that makes it so funny.
Personally I don't understand how you can be a 'huge' TD fan and not like this film, there are some BRILLIANT TD style songs in this film not to mention the scenes that accompany them, off-the-cuff surreal and vulgar lyrics posted on to some heavy rock n' roll riffs all the time subtly taking the p*** out of rock bands that take themselves too seriously - that is what TD is all about, they are a mock-rock band afterall I mean really, what were you expecting!?
Just go into it with an open mind and if its not your thing its not your thing, its in my top 5 fav films ever though I loved it!
P.S Kudos on the cameos Stiller, Meatloaf & an awesome Dave Grohl.Tenacious D: The Pick of DestinyReview date: 2008-08-13 Rating: 6 out of 10`Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny' stars Jack Black as JB and Kyle Gass as KG and is a film about how "The Greatest Rock Band in the World" came together. The secret to being the best though lies with a secret magical guitar pick that is actually the tooth of Satan. JB and KG go on a quest to find the pick and become famous.
I quite like Jack Black films like High Fidelity, Be Kind Rewind, King Kong and School of Rock and liked Tenacious D's album they released a few years ago, so thought I'd give it a try. Although this is basically just an extended music video, it is still absolutely hilarious and has some really funny and clever songs in it too.
I'm not much of a rock fan so I probably didn't appreciate some of the references to the genre and get some of the jokes but it didn't stop it from being an entertaining (and frankly, quite bizarre) film that fans of Jack Black, rock or comedy in general should enjoy.
