The very first MHL event took place on Halloween night 2002. Five hundred fans of the show sat in the grounds of Dudley Castle in the West Midlands as the team investigated the building and its grounds. In a first for live television members of the viewing audience were invited to phone or text in to determine whereabouts in the castle the team investigated. Webcams also enabled those viewers with a PC to monitor the action live. David Bull presented all the events from the "Hub" and Yvette Fielding presented the live investigations while Spiritualist Medium Derek Acorah encountered the spirits.
When Historian Richard Felix tells us "this is a place of terror, of torment, of death, anguish, pain, execution, murder, you name it," we know it's going to be an eventful night, or maybe not. The first spirit that Derek encounters is that of a Miner who died in a rock fall. Derek then encounters the distraught spirit of a man whose wife was thrown from the castle walls. In the castle shop both Derek and Yvette encounter the spirit of a mischevious but good-natured woman.
At Christmas 2002 the team visited Dover Castle in Kent. In The King's Chamber Derek encounters the spirit of a dedicated servant to the King. The king in question was probably not Elvis. We also learn that one way to reduce Yvette to tears is to breathe in her ear. In the Guardroom a key placed on a white piece of paper inexplicably moves. Derek then encounters the spirit of a Drummer Boy who was brutally murdered for the money he was carrying.
After literally a few seconds in The Midland Grand Hotel in London, Derek feels the presence of a spirit man close to him. The hotel was built on a medieval burial ground and when Derek enters the basement he is aware of three different layers of residual energy. Two other Mediums join Derek in Room 10 and feel the raw terror of a young man who was murdered there. Parasychologist Ciaran O'Keeffe asks the viewers at home to undertake a mass automatic writing experiment. Later on he asks them to take part in a white-noise experiment.
At Woodchester Mansion in Gloucestershire Derek encounters the spirit of a very mischevious and very short man. This man, no taller than 3' 8", was an entertainer for Roman Soldiers in life. Derek also encounters the spirit of a French Workman who was murdered by his colleagues. When the team go outside Derek says he is aware of satanic rituals and human sacrifice. He is also aware of a headless horseman.
Back in 2002 the sighting of an orb or any inexplicable noise was something to get excited about. Times have changed and now the more recent MHL events show team members under sustained attack from vicious spirits. MHL 3 & 4 are classic examples. MHL 1 really was new territory for the team and as such it is difficult to recommend over later events. However, as a gentle introduction to the delights of Most Haunted I would recommend it. Meanwhile, I am still waiting for that full-body apparition to be caught on film.
