Well, I read the reviews of this show and have enjoyed some recent Crime shows, with great ensemble acting, like NCIS or The Shield, shows with quality writing, humour and drama, so I thought I would buy this and give it a try hoping it might continue a good trend in recent US Drama.
I like many of the actors,so I thought at least I could rely on some good performances if the quality of the stories weren't up to par.
But, I have to say, I am thouroughly unimpressed. The stories are basic, boring and predictable.'Dumb' in one word.
The lead character is extremely annoying and I struggled to find anything to like about her. The character, not the Actor.I have never seen the Actor before so I cannot decide if she is normally this annoying. If you think that being condescending or patronising in a Southern US Accent 'cute', then this is the show for you as it seems that every episode relies on it in lieu of good intelligent writing.
The first series I have bought from Amzaon that I have been unable to bother finishing.

Perfect castingReview date: 2008-07-12 Rating: 8 out of 10This show is fantastically entertaining. There are two main reasons for this - both the ensemble cast and the writing are great. The actors deliver the delightfully snappy dialogue in a way which must bring joy to the scriptwriters and makes the most of the quirky situations. The development of a disfunctional group of colleagues into a close and effective team is both believable and fun. OK the desire of the criminals of LA to spill the beans at the drop of a hat seems unlikely but then not all criminals are criminal masterminds and Deputy Chief Johnson must come as a surprise to them. The actors are all great but the two most cynical members of the squad are my favourites- I just can't decide whether I love Lt Flynn or Lt Prevenza more. They are a great double-act.SuperbReview date: 2007-08-20 Rating: 10 out of 10This is much more akin to Prime Suspect than anything else, and Kyra Sedgwick had acknowledged her debt to Helen Mirren as a role model. This is top draw police procedural with the added bonus of Kyra Segewick's flawless portrayal of a forty something deputy chief, whose private life trails a distant second to her job. The velvet Southern belle facade that covers the ferocious iron fist of legal righteousness is quite something to behold. Keeping secrets from this woman simply is not an option, hence the title of the show - she closes cases like no other. The writing of the show is above all else intelligent, and laced with wonderful moments of dark humour. I've watched seasons one and two on DVD virtually back to back over the last couple of days and it's been fantastic entertainment. My only regret is that now I have to wait so long for season three to come along. I'm really pleased to see that Kyra has signed on for seven seasons of 15 eps apiece, so five more seasons to go. Bring 'em on, is all I can say!
Brilliant show!!!Review date: 2007-06-18 Rating: 10 out of 10I cannot agree with the negative comments made by some of the reviewers here. This show is brilliant, as is Kyra (wife of Kevin Bacon). I also love Boston Legal and Criminal Minds, CSI and many other fantastic US imports. The writing IS good, and the acting IS good and the characters ARE believable and we, in my family, LOVE IT. WATCH IT - and PERLEEZE, DO NOT CLOSE YOUR EYES!! Thank you, thank you so murch. (quote Brenda Lee)Bad acting can spoil everythingReview date: 2007-06-04 Rating: 4 out of 10The biggest problem of this show is the main character. I must admit, it's really well written (the description of the very first reviewer is perfect, I think), and it really is some interesting material for a good actress. Unfortunately, the main actress is below any reproach. Acting is awful, it's really a closer, as you can only watch her with your eyes closed (sorry!!!).
On the whole the show is not that bad, some cases and some supporting characters are more or less interesting. Like a lukewarm tea. Far from being boiling, not yet cold.
So I'd put my recommendations like this: IF you like this kind of drama, IF you are not a single-minded CSI fan, IF you are not so fond of things from "this side of the pond" like Prime Suspect, Cracker, Waking the Dead, etc., IF you have watched enough of Numb3rs, Without a Trace, Criminal Minds, etc., IF you have already re-watched the good old stuff like Homicide: Life On the Street, Murder One (etc.), IF you do NOT consider bad acting a torture, IF you have nothing better to do on some rainy weekend, well, then you might enjoy this.
