Rare medium well doneReview date: 2007-08-26 Rating: 10 out of 10Much better than most of today's contemporary TV programs, this series has depth of character and it does not lose momentum through the first season.
The first DVD contains the conclusion to the cliffhangers from the first season. Some of the characters in the pilot to make it into the regular episodes. This package even has a fun though maybe distracting to some 3-D. I got out my glasses and ooohd and aaahd.
Great formula as Allison Dubois (Patricia Arquette) who has a gift since childhood of talking to the dead and getting physique vibes. She diagnoses or misdiagnoses crime scenes for a local district attorneys office. As her child puts it she is a "guesser." Natural they are the skeptics with negative attitudes to overcome and obscure mental images to be interpreted. She must also do this while balancing housework, kids, and a husband that can be snot at times. There is usually a quirky twist in the end of each episode.
Bottom line is that you can get hooked on the series and will feel cheated when you run out of episodes. It is interesting that they spread the abilities around in the family instead of keeping just to Allison.
Better than Season 1Review date: 2007-06-16 Rating: 10 out of 10
Following the success of Season 1 of Medium I was eagerly awaiting the release of Season 2 and I wasn't disappointed. In the same vein as Season 1 we see Patricia Arquette et al try to cope with Alison's special gift. If anything season 2 is better than season 1 as the nightmares get darker and the tension is higher than season 1.
What made season 1 of Medium special for me was that Patricia Arquette portrayed a normal harassed mother of three trying to juggle work and home-life like anyone else. The only difference is that her work isn't mainstream. I saw an interview with Patricia Arquette between seasons and admired her so much more for refusing the producers request that she loose weight to play the part of Alison. Like her I feel the realism of the part is partly due to the fact that she's not an uber-glam, stiletto-wearing, gun-toting size zero femme fatale. If she was then Medium would be just like any other show on tv with a hot blonde to drag in the crowds. Keeping it real makes it more appealing to the rest of us.
funny, scary, thrilling, and endearing.Review date: 2007-05-24 Rating: 10 out of 10If you're anything like me and you can't stand waiting a whole week for the next episode of a tv show you really enjoy, then buying Season 2 of medium will satisfy you no end! Having watched some of season 1 on telly, i decided to stop watching it and waited for the dvd release so i could watch all the episodes at my own pace. As soon as i finished watching it, i checked amazon and to my joy season 2 was already available in the U.S. I quickly ordered my copy in and watched all 22 enthralling episodes in 3 days. Patrica Arquette as Allison Dubois is just great in a role she seems born to play (she won an emmy for her performances), the supporting cast are good too, especially her long suffering on screen husband Jake Weber (as Joe Dubois). A special mention should go to the kids who also do a fantastic job. What i love the most about this show (apart from the fact that it can be funny, scary, thrilling & endearing) is the clever dynamic of Allison Dubois' work life and home life; the 'out-there' storylines are mixed with very real and down to earth family scenes and that really lends credibility to each episode. Medium is a well constructed, cleverly thought out, finely written and well executed piece of television. I never find it dull, although inevitably i do prefer some episodes to others (look out for the 3D episode!....genius!).
Overall i would say this season is better than the first and promises to get better still with Season 3 (which is just starting a run on BBC1).
I believe Medium is a quality show and deserves to be up there with Lost, 24, House, ER and the other top knotch American exports.
