Adaptations of timeless classics.
Review date: 2008-05-11 Rating: 10 out of 10
Two out of the three classic children's films are BBC adaptations.
The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe is a beautiful adaptation of the C.S Lewis classic.Anyone expecting Hollywood style special effects is going to be very disappointed as like all BBC releases,it's controlled by the budget!! Don't let this put you off though as it is a true classic of children's television.Wonderfully acted and spread out into a six part series, it will appeal mostly to small children and is an excellent introduction to the literary delights of C.S Lewis.
The Box of delights is another BBC adaptation, this time from 1984 and was a huge hit at the time.Young Kay Harker (Devin Stanfield) is given a tatty old box by a mysterious Punch and Judy man (Patrick Troughton) who he meets on his journey home from school for Christmas. Kay discovers the box has magical powers and his adventure begins. This series has gone down in children's television history and is a staple in my family at Christmas time!
I had not seen The Snow Queen before and whilst I enjoyed it it was not as good as the other two.An adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale starring Juliet Stevenson ,Kenneth Welsh and featuring the voice of Patrick Stewart.
All in all,an excellent value boxset that runs to almost seven hours of viewing time.It has English and SDH subtitles.Highly recommended.
