This was a truly moving film. There are some excellent performances from supporting cast, particularly the daughter of the more liberal family. There is hope and anguish for the family at the centre of this story in equal measure. Recommended.

Shanghai Dreams takes the viewer into the life lived in the 1980's by an idealistic family who moved in the 70's to help establish factories in the interior, never dreaming they would not be allowed to return to Shanghai.The film is full of beautiful elegiac images of the Chinese countryside which sit alongside the harshness of the day- to- day life. We focus on one particular family and experience the disappointment of the father who sees his children being deprived of the opportunity for education and advancement. Conflict within the family leads to inevitable tragedy as the daughter, who has been brought up in this environment and considers it her home clashes with the father's authoritarian rule.The film is beautifully paced and acted. The camera dwells on some images to enormous effect and the director is not afraid to let silence between characters speak volumes.THe film's realism leaves the viewer with an understanding of an era in Chinese history which has not been much publicised.I recommend this film to all who enjoyed films such as 'The Blue Kite'.
