Unnerving

A very good movie,which had my hairs standing on end a few times!I bought this dvd on the strength of the reviews on amazon and elsewhere I was not disapointed.The sinister atmosphere that film has from beginning is quite remarkable as it is sustained throughout.Is this a ghost story or the story of young woman slowly mentally unraveling ? The film is abiguous on this point and leaves the final decision up to the viewer.

Spine chilling classic

What can I say apart from buy this classic British psychological horror at once, and bathe in its beautiful black and white imagery(courtesy of Freddie Francis), and also watch in wonder at a film that leaves so much to the imagination of its audience, leaving many questions unanswered at the end, and offering no cosy, comforting resolution.
Who are the children most at peril from, the malign spirits that haunt Bly House, or their new Governess as she mentally disintergrates? Are the ghosts of Quint and Mrs Jessell a very real and dangerous force or are they just a figment of Miss Gidden's fragile mind?
Too many chilling scenes to mention in one review, but I think the goodnight kiss is the most frightening and amibiguous of all.
One things for sure. Once watched The Innocents is a film that will linger in the mind of the viewer, long after it has finished. Well it did with me anyway.
Just a mention of this superb DVD release. The film itself looks absolutely stunning, and their are extras aplenty including a short film directed by Jack Clayton The Bespoke Overcoat, an excellent commentary by Professor Christopher Frayling, and the package comes complete with a lovely little booklet about the film.
I must say its nice to see classic British Horror treated with respect for a change, as many releases comes with no extras and poor transfers. So, full marks to the BFI for this wonderful release.

This film had passed me by until I went to see Juan Antonio Bayona's excellent El Orfanato [The Orphanage], after which a friend recommended I see Jack Clayton's The Innocents. What can I say? I was absolutely blown away by every aspect of it - the creeping psychological horror, the astonishing deep focus cinematography, brilliant use of sound, and a mesmerising central performance by Deborah Kerr. Top marks to the BFI for putting the DVD together in such a great package: nice menus, and an informative introduction and running commentary track by Professor Christopher Frayling - the best in the business, in my opinion. Don't hesitate in buying this superb DVD of a cinematic masterpiece!
The magic of classics

Just marvelous. A splendid picture. What an atmosphere, what a cast, what a cinematography! Pure art, subtly seasoned with mystery and ambiguity. How can it be that I didn't know of that movie's existence until recently? And when will Hollywood dare taking the risk of producing masterpieces like this again? `More with less' is the motto here. 'The Blair Witch Project' was a hopeful sign. As were 'The Others' and 'The Mothman Prophecies'. Movies that leave questions and stimulate the audience's imagination. Is the ability to visualize everything with computer-generated imagery killing the inventiveness and story-telling skills of today's filmmakers? This DVD, beautifully presented with booklet, together with 'The Haunting' (Robert Wise's, I mean, not that Jan de Bont CGI circus - dear Ms. Jackson must be turning in her grave) are `must haves' for all quality horror movie buffs. And as with Robert Wise's masterpiece this one definitely doesn't need a remake.
Chilling masterpiece

One of the creepiest films you'll ever see, from the opening credits, (which ditch the 20th Century Fox fanfare for the haunting lullaby that recurs throughout the film) right until the climax. Less really is more in the case of films such as this, much being left to the viewer's imagination. Modern films seem to lack the subtlety and sense of unease so evident in 'The Innocents'. Watch it in the dark, and revel in the eerieness of a proper piece of cinema.
