Let's be honest: this 1995 epic isn't nearly as bad as its negative publicity led us to expect. At the time, Waterworld was the most expensive Hollywood production in history (it had a Titanic-sized 200 million US dollars budget), and the film arrived in cinemas with so much controversy and negative gossip that it was an easy target for ridicule. The movie itself, a flawed but enjoyable post-apocalypse thriller, deserves better. Waterworld stars Kevin Costner as the Mariner, a lone maverick with gills and webbed feet who navigates the endless seas of Earth after the complete melting of the polar ice caps. The Mariner has been caged like a criminal when he's freed by Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and enlisted to help her and a young girl (Tina Majorino) escape from the Smokers, a group of renegade terrorists led by Dennis Hopper in yet another memorably villainous role. It is too bad the predictable script isn't more intelligent, but as a companion piece to The Road Warrior, this seafaring stunt-fest is adequately impressive. --Jeff Shannon

To quote Jim Carrey in Cable Guy " I don't know what all the fuss was about, I thought that movie rocked, it ruled!". He's not far wrong even if he was a head-case, sure people complained about the scientific liklihood and blah blah. Honestly, who gives a damn ? Kevin Costner fights pirates on jet-ski's in a post-apocalyptic future, it's a cinch that this isn't a Ken Loach film. As such, the stunts effects and set-pieces all are top notch. Downside is that Costner has little in the way of charisma in the lead role, he has a haggard look about him, a bitter disposition and, appropriately maybe for a fish-man, a mullet hairstlye which made me feel ill. Quite ill.. In fact it should lose a point just for that. No that's cruel- i'll stick with it. Seriously , it's better than you've been led to believe. Give it a go.

LIKE THE CURATES EGG, GOOD IN PARTS, A BIT LIKE CRAP FROM CHINA A BIT FAR FETCHED BUT DIFFERENT. NOT AS BAD AS SOME OF THE LATEST RELEASES WHICH ARE LIKE WATCHING PAINT DRY.THE YOUNG GIRL WAS EXCELLENT CONSIDERING HER AGE I THINK SHE HAS A GREAT FUTURE WHOEVER SHE IS.

I fell into a deep coma while watching this film from which I did not awake for five years. A similar thing happened while watching The Postman. (AKA, Waterworld On Dry Land)

10 years of my life wasted! Thank you Kevin Costner!


Spectacular

First of all ignore what Sea Monkey "jojo2005" is saying below, as that is a load of wrong. The film may have done porrly at release but it is fair to say that anyone who apreciates a good film will enjoy this. IT has an originality about it that cant be beat, a good story, great acting and the characters are very creative. If you liked films such as LOTR or The Faculty give this a try.
