Pure nostalgia - the original "Ashes to Ashes"
Review date: 2008-05-30 Rating: 10 out of 10
So 1980s, so cliched, so brilliant! I loved Dempsey and Makepeace back in the 80s when I was barely a teenager and I totally revelled in watching it again 20 years later. Although The Sweeney has been referenced for Ashes to Ashes - it actually has more in common with D&M and both its tone and look are very similar. Although there is some total silliness and far too much gun-play (despite various references to its unacceptability in 1980s Britain),it moves along at a cracking pace and is both funny and moving at times. Genuine chemistry between Brandon and Barber make it more than just action and because it got cancelled before the relationship was consumated, it doesn't suffer from the "Moonlighting" syndrome of what to do next. The extras are interviews, both contemporary and recent, with Brandon and Barber and they narrate both the pilot and second episodes, giving intersting insights to both the show and their relationship.
If you loved it then, you'll love it now!
