From the sublime to the ridiculous

This is a great box set with some brilliant movies and extras. The disc for Superman: the movie and Superman 2 are pure class; great films, great extras, the complete package. You also get the lovingly restored Richard Donner version of Superman 2; something every fan of the original movie will really enjoy (personally I loved it to pieces and look forward to watching it many more times). However the quality of the DVD extras goes down hill along with the quality of the movies: Eg. The commentary on Superman 3 is pretty ropey and the 4th film has very few extras. But these releases are still a big improvement over the vanilla disc that came out previously. The only real disappointment for me were the theatrical cuts of the movies themselves. Fans of campy classics like Superman 3 usually grow to love that type of film through repeated TV screenings. In this case the DVD cut of the film is a lot shorter then the TV version and feels a bit flat. However most of the cut scenes previously included on TV are on the disc as extras (in pan scan). Whilst it is nice to see Superman 3 & 4 with commentaries, these discs don't feel like the definitive version of these movies to me. But saying that these films are not as popular as the first two so it's unlikely we'll see better versions officially released.

The other features (cartoons and black and white movie) are just filler. Their OK, but have very little to do with the Christopher Reeve movies.

It's a lot cheaper to buy this box set then the special editions of the first two movies separately so it's well worth having.
However, if you already have all the Supes' films from the previous DVD release the only essential addition to your collection is Richard Donner's Superman 2 which you can buy separately as part of the 3 disc DVD release of that movie.

A Superior collection of a superior Superman..

On watching these movies again, one is reminded of what a brilliant performance Christopher Reeve gave in the role of Superman. Not forgetting the Direction of Richard Donner and the sheer excellence of the first 2 films particularly. This set contains all 4 Reeve/Superman films, although the first 2 are the ones that matter. Although Reeve's performance is fantastic throughout the set, it is sad to see the quality of the films go down, despite managing to retain the great cast of actors. However this set contains all you could want (despite the soundtrack of the original version being a bad move, the extended edition is superior anyway, with additional scenes originally cut from the movie). The 'making of' extras are great, as they date from the time of the movies, and the new featurettes are also worth a view, particularly the screen tests of Reeve and various actresses for Lois Lane.2 versions of the 2nd film are also here, with the restored 'Director's cut' revealing new plot endings and story ideas. The inclusion of the 1951 'Superman and the Mole men' is entertaining enough as a period piece, but of special interest is the entire run of Fleischer Studios' Superman cartoons from the 1930s/40s. These are a revelation, with outstanding artwork - every frame is a work of art- and beautiful animation. These cartoons played their part in adding to the mythology of the character, and a nice featurette on the Fleischer cartoons rounds off a worthwhile set.
All in all, a set that is a worthy addition to any collection.

Besides the minor faults, wrong soundtrack for the theatrical version, this collection is super

The main gem in this collection is the richard donner cut. Simply superb.

Also the deleted scences on Superman 4, are hilarious, the 1st nuclear man is hysterical and comical

This is a must buy for all superman fans, it is beautifully packaged and superman 2 : richard donner cut is dedicated to Chris Reeves

Sadly, original soundtrack is missing again..

This box set is great but..! My only gripe is and it is a big one! is that SUPERMAN THE MOVIE Disc 1 includes the Original Theatrical Version. Wrong! The film is the theatrical version, but the Soundtrack has been recreated that sounds like half of the original and the other half from the 2000 expanded edition. The opening credits is a dead giveaway as well as sound effects throughout the movie that have been obviously done for the 5.1 Dolby sound. Optional sound for the original sound should have been included!!

The only massive feature not evident on all the Movie discs in this box set are photo galleries, that would have completed the special features.

The vintage Making of Documentaries are true gems to these DVDs.

The BEST Live Action Superman Returns In A Super-Collection Boxset..

This is the second outing for Christopher Reeve's Superman on DVD. This boxset is not set to disappoint, with an amazing 9 disc boxset. However this is not a complete Reeve collection as on disk 4 of Superman The Movie there is the 1951 Superman and The Mole Men film and nine remastered Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons and eight remastered Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons on disk 2 of Superman II.

Warner Bros however has stretched the content that was seen on the two sided disk Special Edition of Superman The Movie in 2001 and seperated on to 4 disks. However I don't think this will disappoint any fan of the films or collector.

Can't wait to see for the first time ever the Richard Donner Cut and the additional footage for Superman IV.

A great set and you will believe a man can fly again!!!
