Guyver revamped and back with a vengance
Review date: 2007-01-23 Rating: 10 out of 10

Guvyer has been revamped and is back with a vengance... but not quite as gory as the original Manga. It's a BRAND NEW animation (no not just recased) that was released in the States in 2006 and follows the same story as the original Manga. However as those of you who have read my review on the original that was unfinished, this one includes episodes that have never been seen before (Yes that's right you did read that correctly).

The disc will be part of a 7 disc set that I believe and is planned to develop the story PAST the original Manga series so we will know what happens to Sho. Each disc i think is planned to be released every 3 months since this first was released in October 2006 and the second in January 2007.

I happened to see this by chance and couldn't believe my good luck when I purchased this in the US.

The soundtrack and voices have been completely redone in English and there is no option to have Japanese subtitles. There are 4 episodes on the disc;
Episode 1: The wonderous Bio-Boosted Armor
Episode 2: The secret Society of Chronos
Episode 3: Inspector Lisker
Episode 4: The Visitor at Dusk

This disc comes with a really cool full colour booklet with an interview with the director Katsuhito Akiyama, drawings of the main characters Sho, Tetsuro, Mizuki, Fumio Fukamachi, Risker (formerly Lisker in the Manga version) as well as monster profiles.

There are some new never seen before Zoanoides outside of the usual suspects, Gregole, Vamore, like 'Cadan' an aquatic zoanoid or 'Synevite' a flexible zoanoid.

All in all this first disc is an excellent buy even though it's region 1 only but the chances are if you have the original, then the region won't be a problem.

The animation is clear and very cool and it's extremely exciting to know that the series will finally be completed. However it's not quite as graphically gory as the original. I also think that it has a slightly less dramatic feel to it - for example one moment in the original version that sticks out in my mind was when the Guyver first appears from the water in the first episode, it's all dramatic as Guyver 1 walks cooly from the mist with swirling music playing. No such luck with this.
There was just one other thing that bothered me- a Zoanoid with a Scottish accent just does not sound right at all. I cringed when I heard it and it's a shame that if they were going to do something like that, they couldn't be bothered to hire someone who's actually Scottish.

Despite it's flaws all in all I would definitely say it was worth my money as it's new, it's still cool and it will be completed at long last. If you search for the second disc that's out, you can also buy the collectors box which should house all 7 discs when released but it's more expensive. I didn't bother but i don't have the shelf space (otherwise i might have).

I'm eagerly awaiting the second disc (Guyver, Vol. 2: The Bioboosted Armor Procreation of the Wicked) and the third is due out in March(Guyver 3: Lost Number Commandos)... bring it on!
