A moving and inspiring story of redemption and personal triumph in the face of great odds, Jet Li's Fearless is the based-on-facts story of Chinese folk hero Huo Yuanjia (Jet Li). The son of a martial-arts master whose greatest strength was his restraint, Huo grows into an unbeatable fighter whose pride and thoughtlessness lead to a chain of tragic losses. After a classic wanderer-in-the-wilderness penance, Huo reinvents himself as a mature instructor of Wushu, a martial arts system that embraces all forms of fighting without preference or pre-judgement. He also becomes a populist symbol, at the dawn of the 20th century, of China's refusal to entirely capitulate to the boot of Western colonialists. Taking on whatever European, American, or Japanese fighter the outsiders bring in to demoralize the natives, Huo becomes a legend that, in real life, is still revered. Thrillingly directed by Ronny Yu (Warriors of Virtue), Jet Li’s Fearless is a dazzling action movie that transcends its breathless fight sequences with Huo's sportsmanship virtues, i.e., knowing when you've won by example, rather than by the fist. Jet Li is superb in the role. --Tom Keogh

Just not that good
Review date: 2008-05-13 Rating: 4 out of 10

Some of the fighting is great. The fights against westerners are the best, other action sequences rely too heavily on clumsy computer effects.
There is a lack of story which is a shame considering the wealth of material on Huo Yuanjia. (The real life martial artist on whom the film is based)
The notion that it is propaganda is absurd, it is one sided but the west really did treat China badly at the time of the opium trade. Also the mutual respect between the Japanese and Chinese martial artists goes against a trend of frosty relations between the two countries. the film fails to live up to such an interesting premise

FEARLESS IS A MASTERPIECE! JET LI'S BEST FILM EVER!!! 10/10
Review date: 2008-04-14 Rating: 10 out of 10

Fearless is a lesson in how to make a high quality martial arts film...
It has a powerful and meaningful story which is a credit to Jet Li who is fantastic as the lead character. (based on the real life character of Huo Yuanjia a legendary fighter in China)

This is probably the best film i've ever seen him in, but it also has choreography from the legend that is Yuen Woo-ping (Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, Drunken Master, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, to name but a few)
who directs fight scenes that are of the highest order... truly a brilliant film and highly recommended to anyone who likes good fights in there kung fu movies but also wants a good story with some half decent acting. Forget 5/5 this film deserves 10/10

Martial Arts Rule.
Review date: 2008-03-25 Rating: 10 out of 10

This was the first Martial Arts film that I watched last year. I had never watched Martial Arts films before but now after watching many including House of Flying Daggers and Hero I still think this is a good film.

FYI this film does have an English audio option but taking into account the kind of film you are watching I would suggest you watch it in the original language and have the English subtitles on. It may sound horrible having to read subtitles but you soon forget you are reading them and it makes the film see more authentic.

Much a do about nothing
Review date: 2008-02-25 Rating: 4 out of 10

Not much story or development.Lots of implausible fighting with no broken bones.Eventually becomes a heavy-handed propaganda film about foreigners messing with China. If this is how the Chinese view us,then you had better stop pumping your money into buying Chinese goods etc now before it is too late.Note the bad guys are the Japanese ambassador and a "westerner".

A solid if not stunning martial arts movie
Review date: 2008-01-09 Rating: 8 out of 10

Very loosely based on a true story, Fearless is the story of Huo Yuanjia, a martial artist who became famous by challenging and defeating martial artists from around the world in order to return pride to the Chinese nation at the beginning of the twentieth century. In the film Huo Yuanjia faces personal tragedy but overcomes all obstacles until he becomes a world renowned martial artist.

Although not terribly historically accurate this film is still entertaining to watch with some great fight choreography and a little more depth than you would get from the usual martial arts movie. Personally I found that the main problem with the film, and the only reason I didn't give it five stars, was Jet Li himself. Although his martial arts is peerless and a joy to watch I feel he is not greatly gifted in the acting department seeming rather uncomfortable and unconvincing in the quieter parts of the film. Overall however Fearless was a most enjoyable movie with a nice story and a surprisingly emotional ending. Although not the best martial arts movie in the world I do feel that any fan of the genre would enjoy this film.
