Synopsis

Charles Bronson stars in a genre-defining vigilante thriller that made him a household name. A fatal sexual assault on his wife and daughter leads mild-mannered architect Paul Kersey (Bronson) to rethink the justice system in his own terms when he discovers the police to be ineffectual, bureaucratic slackers. He then starts to single-handedly reduce New York's crime rate by murdering every thug, scumbag, and no goodnik he lays eyes on. The film, despite its use of graphic violence as entertainment, was hailed as a socially complex and engaging movie that shocked audiences across the country. Subsequently, Bronson filmed a long series of films as Kersey that were heavier on violence than substance. However, DEATH WISH is a classic American film whose themes and style have been imitated by filmmakers all over the world.

BRONSON KICKS ASS LIKE NO ONE!
Review date: 2008-07-06 Rating: 10 out of 10

The film that started it all finally released uncut and uncensored. Although I prefer the sequel, this is the best DEATH WISH from an objective point of view. It's depiction of a "bleeding heart liberal" turning vigilante was rarely done this well. The "action" scenes are short but effective since this isn't a Rambo-style shoot 'em up like parts 3 & 4 have become, although they look a little "staged" and unrealistic. And if you look at Winner's later works (namely "Dirty Weekend") you can see the exact same choreography again. HOWEVER DEATH WISH IS CERTAINLY ONE OF THE BEST FILMS OF THE 70'S AND TOTALLY UNDERRATED, leaving little to complain about. Bronson's actions - as lawless as they might be - are believable and you're with him 100 % (and if not, you're in the wrong section anyway, go check out some kiddie movies). The media hype displayed in the film also does its bit. He himself delivers one of his best and most believable performances ever.

5 Stars for the Movie * 1 Star for DVD

Not much to Say - a Classic Charles Bronson Movie but the Paramount UK DVD is bad.
It is a NTSC to PAL Transfer and not Film to PAL (93 min NTSC = 89 min PAL).
Result: Ghosting and a bit Blurred. Also the Image Format (1.78) is not Optimal - at the Top and the Bottom is Missing Something.
Buy if You can the NL DVD from Sony - Uncut, Film to PAL Transfer and the Right Full Format 1.85:1.

violent, controvversial and original
Review date: 2008-02-15 Rating: 10 out of 10

This was a great film. Ignore the follow ups, that never should of been made.

After a violent attack on his wife and daughter, one of which dies and the other hospitalised, Paul Kersey(Charles Bronson) decides that he is not prepared to be an average helpless citizen, any more. Leading a double life at night, he plans to exact revenge on muggers, robbers and violent crooks.

Gripping but underated
Review date: 2007-10-20 Rating: 10 out of 10

Due to this films rubbish sequels(each one worse than the last)critics seem to tarnish it with the same brush. If your new to this film ignore the critics and go buy. Its the gripping and sometimes disturbing story of Paul Kersey who turns vigilante after his wife is killed and his daughter raped by low life scum who break into his house. This is one of the first films(if not the first)of its kind and also one of the most underated movies of the seventies. Even though it does seem a little dated now. Charles Bronson is on top form as Kersey. Also to my knowledge this is the first time the film is available in its uncut version on either dvd or video.

Classic!

Michael Winner's masterpiece has aged well. Aside from being an excellent action film, it also questions the morality of vigilante behaviour and asks whether it merely leads to anarchy. Personally I am all for it though. A couple of weeks ago I was browsing in a branch of a major high-street discount bookstore, when a masked gunman entered and demanded the money from the till. Fortunately the quick thinking of a maverick workman foiled the crime. He removed a tool from his box and hurled it across the room, knocking the gunman clean out. If you ask me, his heroic behaviour should be an example to us all- in a day when most people are too scared to stand up for what is right. If more of us were willing to throw a spanner in 'The Works' when a crime is in progress, the world would be a safer place.
