A TIMELESS CLASSIC WITH SUPERB COMEDY ACTING.
Review date: 2008-05-09 Rating: 10 out of 10

Few comedy series now an amazing fifty years old can compete with the witty wise cracking Sgt Ernest Bilko and his motorpool buddies.

Unusually the series looks it was made in the fifties, even before i was born and im 45, but strangely the comedy and scripts are bang up to date, they will never date and will remain funny forever for the principal reason of Phil Silvers brilliant comedy acting.

The scripts and storylines were of rare quality and this was an American show when often American comedy does not appeal to a European audience.

Private Ritzick and Dobermann were Bilkos main stooges and the storylines of most of the many episodes included them.

The long suffering commanding officer Col Hall played oh so well by Paul Ford was a superb addition always trying to catch Bilko out for flouting army regulations on his get rich qick schemes.

Two episodes that spring to mind are when Bilko takes delivery of a racehorse and ties lights to its briddle because he can only train it at night to avoid the Col stare.Col Hall wakes from his sleep seeing this light passing his bedroom window on a regular basis unable to figure out where it is coming from.

Secondly Bilko is kitted out in a brand new uniform with pleats.Even Col Hall doesnt have pleats on his uniform and he is dead jelous.

Combined with Silvers brilliant comedy acting and timing and the superb scripts Sgt Bilko will never date it will remain fresh and side splittingly funny for as long as its repeated which sadly is too infrequently.

At last - Bilko on DVD
Review date: 2007-12-07 Rating: 10 out of 10

It has long astonished me that the Phil Silvers Show has been pretty much forgotten by the American television networks, and only used as occasional schedule fillers over here. This is a show that won awards by the sackful, and provided the blueprint for the modern sitcom. Truly seminal television, then, but for years no DVD.

To be honest I'd given up hoping, and so my heart leapt when I found this. Other reviewers are right to point out some notable absences - 'The Empty Store' and 'Mardi Gras' being two such ommissions. I would add 'The Old Soldiers Home' to this list. However, I would commend whoever put this collection together - I think they've done a pretty good and subtle job. Not only are some of the very best episodes present, but the span of material offers insight into the show's development - it clearly took a little time to work it into the astonishingly fast-paced 'live' event that marks it out, and you will see Silvers at his very best here.

Just remember - you should never eat steak in San Diego...

Funniest show in the 50's
Review date: 2007-11-02 Rating: 10 out of 10

Phil Silvers is a master of comic timing, all those years in vaudeville show through in his marvellous comic creation, Master Sergeant Earnest Bilko.
18 classic episodes on 3 discs, and bearing in mind the age of this show they managed to find a lot of extras too.
Everyone mentions it but the Harry Speakup episode is a total classic.
One of the best DVD purchases I've made in a long time.
