Two words; Pure magic!!!!
Review date: 2008-07-06 Rating: 10 out of 10
The plot: two children have run away from their aunt and have been befriended by a gang of street kids and their leader, the Thief Lord, also known as Scipio. A detective, who has been hired by the aunt, is looking for the children. However, a mysterious comte asks them to steal something for him, something that can help to spin time!
When I read the book, the plot seemed to me to be a little bit like Oliver Twist, as Scipio is like Fagin and the Dodger rolled into one, and Prosper and Bo are like two Olivers. The film is even better than the book, which I thought would be impossible!!!!!!!
All the actors do a fantastic job, but Rollo Weeks as Scipio and Aaron Johnson as Prosper are the best BY A MILE!!! Rollo Weeks manages to pull off both sides of Scipio - just in case there are people reading this who haven't read the book or seen the film, I won't give the game away by telling you what the other side of him is - while Aaron Johnson is just....well, there are no words to describe how fantastic he is as Prosper!
If you like watching films about drama, fantasy and magic, then this one is for you.

An Enjoyable Family Film.Review date: 2007-06-07 Rating: 10 out of 10This is a fantastic family film. There are not too many family films made these days-by that I mean ones that you can watch en masse without squirming uncomfortably into the sofa whilst inappropriate images (or phrases) flash about on screen.Call me old fashioned (though not yet 40!)but I love these sorts of films.
The acting is superb and the relationship between the two main child actors,Prosper and Bo is a joy to watch.I agree with one of the other reviews-there is a similarity to Oliver Twist,it's a 21st century version though! My 11 year old son informs me that the film is better than the book so if your child has read and not enjoyed the book please do not let that put you off the film.I would highly recommend this film for those rainy days when there is nothing else to do but settle down with popcorn and small people and escape to another world for a magical adventure.5*A band of thievesReview date: 2007-02-12 Rating: 2 out of 10 When I saw the earlier, favourable reviews, I thought that I might enjoy this film. However, I found the basic premise of a band of juvenile thieves to be ill conceived. In this day and age, when many communities are plagued by the antisocial behaviour of youths, it does not seem appropriate to present well-spoken, well-dressed teenagers in the role of pickpockets and thieves. A bit of background to their situation at the start of the film might have enabled the viewer to regard them in a more sympathetic light.
However, it was not only the characterisation which seemed to be lacking. The basic plot idea was a novel one. However, it did not give rise to many special effects. Perhaps the producers thought that the Venetian backdrop would suffice. Although I have visited Venice and think that it is a magical place, that magic did not seem to be transferred to this film for some reason. Fantastic FilmReview date: 2006-12-17 Rating: 10 out of 10I have to admit i havent read the book, although it comes highly recommended! But still this film is amazing, visually stunning, with some beautiful shots of Venice. It captures the colour and life of the city through the eyes of children. Some of the special effects aren't extraordinary but the story more than makes up for it.
The young actors are wonderful, Aaron as Prosper is moving and loving, Bo is very sweet and innocently insightful and Rollo Weeks is stunning and alternatly commanding and childlike as Scripio.
Even without the book, this is well worth watching!! I love it!
Its a world to escape to, a dream about childhood adventure and with the touching, hilarious supporting characters well depicted as highly reccommended as the book.
Good for Kids, and anyone else to!Good tryReview date: 2006-09-18 Rating: 8 out of 10It is an excellent book - making it into a film was always going to be hard. The scenery and characterisations are very good, some of the 'shortcuts' don't quite work leaving new viewers stumped and book viewers sad that they've missed out some of the clever bits. It got savaged at the cinema - which I thought a travesty - and would recommend you to take a look - and fall in love with the gang of kids - and the city they live in.
