As a Swede, I don't now much about British criminal law, except the few things I gleaned here and there while watching American legal dramas. But, it's not really the same, is it? I don't intend to review the plot which would be unfair to those contemplating the purchase of the DVD cases for the two seasons. However, what I can say, is that it definitely was a shame the producers didn't carry on with the series. The plot is good, the cast impeccable and the lines, especially those between Penny Downie and Paul Freeman, very entertaining and believable. Having said that, I must say that I was very frustated that the writers never quite seem to be able to decide which way the series was going to take. First season is focusing on legal issues, while I found it quite difficult to grasp the characters'motivation to act the way they did. Season two tried to dwell deeper into the matters of the heart, but alas not deep enough to give you the opportunity to decide whether you sympathize with them or not. At the end of season two, I felt genuinely moved by the characters, starting to love or despise some of them, unfortunately, it was precisely the moment the series ended. Overall, a pleasant if frustrating experience. My only consolation is that I got to watch Paul Freeman (a lot), which I admit was pretty much the reason why I ordered the two cases. If you feel like me about this splendid actor, the New Street Law DVDs is worth any penny.

Soap Opera with some reasonable acting at times
Review date: 2007-11-22 Rating: 6 out of 10

Bought both series 1 and series 2 at the same time because I like John Hannah's work. New Street Law is however a bit of a disappointment and in my view sinks to soap opera levels especially towards the end of both series. Okay I guess if you like soap opera. The first few episodes of series 1 struck me as being not very well acted but slowly improved to the dramatic conclusion in the last episode. While the interviews in the extras on one of the DVDs says how real lawyers in Britain said how realistic the series is they were almost certainly referring to the law cases but as time goes on the cases seem to be of less importance than the personal lives of the members of the two chambers that from the basis of the series. This is when the stories feel like soap opera and where the actions of the barristers become in my view unbelievable. I have to add that my partner and I disagree about some of this and she might give it one more star then me.....

New law show

Ok! i know what you are thinking! not another law show set in court.
well forget it! this show is fun AND can be related to Judge Deed (if you liked that show).
this show has two sets of opposing chambers taking each other on in different cases; the difference is that the leader of one left the other. interested? well give it a go!
