An Absolute Favourite
Review date: 2010-07-27 Rating: 10 out of 10

We watched this series when first shown on TV and thoroughly enjoyed it then. It was wonderful to spend time with Dennis Waterman, Joan Sims and Sam Kelly all over again. The acting was absolutely superb - we frequently found ourselves sitting up quite late to watch the next and even the next instalment. We knew we would be in for a relaxing and enjoyable time caught up in the day to day lives of these three wonderful characters. I suppose Sam Kelly was our absolute favourite but all three of them were a joy to watch. One very sad moment - when we came to the last disc. We knew we would miss Tony, Mrs. Wembley and Sam and the time spent away from day to day cares. 'On The Up' will definitely not be put away and forgotten. Given time it will be brought out again and hopefully again and again. If you enjoyed it first time round, or missed it completely then we recommend without hesitation that you go ahead and buy it.

great

This has to be one of the best sitcoms. I just wish days were like that now.
i really do not know why the bbc decided to end this after only 3 series, it could have gone on and on.
Sam Kelly is such a talented actor and plays of Dennis Waterman and Joan Sims so well. This is the sort of comedy that England is famous for, a comdey that does not rely on filth and moronic behavious like todays sitcoms seem to.

Another gem for Americans to discover
Review date: 2009-12-04 Rating: 10 out of 10

Here's another fine series to tryout if you're an American craving new Britcoms that you haven't seen on PBS. This is a very pleasant, warm comedy with characters that (for the most part) actually like each other for a change. As others have said, the wonderful Joan Sims ("Madge" on As Time Goes By) is especially good but the whole cast is great.
The plot centers on the personal and business struggles of the owner of a successful car rental agency. What's nice about it is that he's honorable and, while rich, hasn't let it go to his head.
The chemistry between the actors is great. You can tell they like each other and the show. Very well-written and enjoyable. A pleasant change from "edgy" comedies both American and British.
Like me, you'll wish the series was longer. A steal at this price.

just how I remembered it
Review date: 2009-11-06 Rating: 10 out of 10

It may be a few years since this show was on television but it is still very funny and the cast are brilliant, for years I have been saying "Just the One" when offered a drink, it is well worth the price for a whole series I am just amazed they never made any more.

Deserved Another Series!
Review date: 2009-09-09 Rating: 10 out of 10

I bought this as a fan of Joan Sims. I had heard of it over the years and after watching it remembered it slightly from when it was originally broadcast (I was 6-8 when it was shown in 1990 - 1992).

At first I was unsure about the 'dated' look and slightly wooden wife, but then realised that the audience are not meant to like her at all and in fact the show is full of gentle humour and excellent acting.

Dennis Waterman has never been one of my favourite actors, he is good in New Tricks and I was sceptical to how I would find him in this. He plays it brilliantly.

Sam Kelly was less familiar to me, but he plays Sam with alot of laughs and warmth, especially in the very last episode of Series 3.

I had bought this for The One & Only Joan Sims. She didn't let me down with her portrayal of Mrs Fiona Wembley, who liked a drop of sherry - Just The One! or several as the case usually was.

It can be compared slightly to As Time Goes By also written by Bob Larbey, though it is a very different show.

Also I think that given the ending of Series 3 it could have been given a Series 4 or at least an hour special to wrap it up nicely, although the final episode does do this to some extent and it doesn't leave you with an 'unfinished' feeling that other shows that suddenly end can do.

On the whole I wouldnt class it as an amazing programme but I would say it is worth watching. I'll watch it several more times and hopefully it will grow on me even more. However the average viewer might take Mrs Wembleys approach and watch it Just The Once!
