Overcast by the likes of Platoon, but this is better
Review date: 2008-05-08 Rating: 8 out of 10
People always go on about Platoon being such a great film, whilst I like the film, Hamburger Hill is even better as far as I'm concerned.
The action feels and looks very real, everyone puts in good solid performances, it deals with the moral issue of war constructively and very well, we get to know some of characters and see them attempting to deal with the issue of war as well as their personal issues too.
There's a nice bit of action, some of the scenes are brutal as is the nature of war, people are killed, maimed and just plain wiped off the face of the Earth with barely a trace of them left, but there also some lighthearted moments too so it's not a constant action, action, action film, but moves at a good pace throughout.
Overall an excellent film and well worth picking up, I've had this film for a long time now and can watch it time and time again (and do).

Good Entertainment, but averageReview date: 2008-02-05 Rating: 6 out of 10If you say to yourself one night, I fancy watching a film with plenty of action, shooting with all the weapons of warfare that come with many war films, this, like many is an entertaining film, however lacks the character and involvement that is involved with other Vietnam classics, such as "Platoon", "Apocalypse Now Redux" or "Full Metal Jacket".
With a combination of music that could be reconsidered, being somewhat a bit cheesy and over-heroic, no particularly outstanding lead characters, and vague story line, the film is enjoyable, but not one that can be called a "classic".
Recommended for those lazy evenings for no-effort-one-your-part entertainment. GRITTY AND REALISTICReview date: 2007-09-29 Rating: 8 out of 10Showing the futility of the Vietnam war from one angle.
Troops would fight to a capture a hill or valley, only to leave the battleground and return to base. No objectives were held and quickly reoccupied by the enemy. The US troops would return to fight for the same ground all over again. It must have been frustrating.
The film follows the battle for 'Hamburger Hill', so named for the high casualties sustained by the attackers.
The action is well filmed and the effects realistic. The best film on Vietnam war until now!Review date: 2007-06-12 Rating: 10 out of 10I always liked this movie very much. It shows the war in Vietnam really well, through the eyes of a squad of soldiers taking part in a very famous battle for Ap Bia mountain (937 metres tall) in 1969. After the battle the mountain was so much covered by burned human bodies (napalm was very much used) that it was called "Hamburger Hill". 70 Americans and at least 600 North Vietnamese regular soldiers died in this battle. And once taken Ap Bia was abandoned! It was one the most shocking moments of the war for the American public and a very strong argument in favour of the Vietnamisation of the war.
The fight is well shown - climbing the hill from the jungle covered valley to the burned to the ground top, one after another soldiers of the squad die in a terribly intense battle. At some moments it goes down to the bayonets! The scene in which the top is finally reached is a great cinema moment. I liked this movie much more than "Platoon" or "Full Metal Jacket", mainly because it is not politically engaged. It is just showing a soldiers story of a soldiers battle. Beginning to show its age!Review date: 2007-01-15 Rating: 4 out of 10Unfortunately this film which I remember seeing on its release has now lost its punch. The acting is ok but there is very little blood and guts, unusual considering the theme and the storyline is a bit weak and dated. All in all a bit of a let down.
