A psychotic masterpiece
Review date: 2008-06-24 Rating: 10 out of 10
Awesome forensic examination of severe psychosis. Along with Keane and Claire Dolan, Kerrigan has created his own cinematic genre consisting of life's outsiders who are tortured by inner demons and displaced within brutal urban landscapes packed with edgy paranoia, exploitation and spiritual emptiness. Although the subject matter is bleak, Kerrigan has a poetic insight that is beautifully rendered in long tracking shots, fragmented dialogue and ambiguity. This film excels at placing the disturbingly ill Peter (superbly created by Greene) at the centre of a nebulous reality, punctuated by numerous voices, some real, some not, self mutilation and murder. Peter's behaviour is intelligently juxtaposed with the cop who is investigating the death of a young girl. This `normal' character is tested by his job and tormented by an event where he turns a blind eye. Perhaps that is the reason he behaves the way he does when confronted with a split second decision at the end of the film. Brilliant.

Want a bad awful film this is itReview date: 2007-09-28 Rating: 2 out of 10I couldn't sit through it , it was so badly put together , the actors seem amateurish and the main character says nothing, the story line is fragmented and everything from the camera angles to the script and acting is bad..If you're looking for a decent film on schizophrenia etc this is not it....I would describe this as a low budget horror not because it is scary..It's bloody awful.a disturbing experienceReview date: 2004-03-25 Rating: 8 out of 10"Clean, Shaven" is a chilling study in paranoia and obsession cleverly disguised as a thriller. Peter Berg is excellent as a schizophrenic loner who drives across the country searching for his daughter and who may (or may not be) a child murderer, pursued by a detective with doubts about what is really going on. Although the film works perfectly well as a thriller (is Berg really a murderer? is her daughter in danger?) and even as a contemporary western/road movie (the movie reaches its climax with the final showdown between Berg and the cop, who haven't met until then), what's really impressive about "Clean, Shaven" is the way it takes you inside Berg's fractured mind, by clever use of purely cinematic effects and some of the scariest sound effects ever used. Just do not expect a "normal" thriller (no car chases nor shootings here) nor a slaher, although some scenes (a little girl's autopsy, Berg's weird sessions of self mutilation) might be too grisly and unpleasant even for hardened gore fans. A disturbing and astonishing experience, "Clean, Shaven" is in a way matchless.
