Thought provoking look at Glasgow
Review date: 2008-05-27 Rating: 8 out of 10

I had never heard of this series, let alone the individual Just another Saturday episode, until I got it as a present for Christmas.

Was pleasantly surprised at it's thoughtful look at life in 70s Glasgow. The story follows a young boy who is a drum major in a band on a Orange Walk.
While he takes a huge amount of pride in what he does, over the course of the day we see a variety of other characters, driven by different motivations, and we get a look at the sectarian undercurrent in Glasgow, looking at both sides of the divide.

The only downside is that there are certain bits that tend to meander - showing overlong sections of flute band music and footage. While interesting to get a feel for the whole experience, some of these sections do go on a bit.

apart from that, definitely recommended.

Captures Glasgow in the mid-70's
Review date: 2007-10-11 Rating: 8 out of 10

This film (actually a day-in-the-life type play), when watched from the 21st century, has a strong nostalgic element and does a great job of capturing Glasgow around 1975. Even today it may be seen by some as rather controversial, but if Scotland is going to rise above sectarianism then issues and material like this should be readily explored.

The basic story is one of an orange band member who participates in the main annual Orange Walk in Glasgow one day in July. During the march he is faced with sectarian comments and deeds from fellow band members and (reluctant) spectators along the route (some of whom start throwing bottles). However, at night he's off to the pub with his Catholic mates for a few pints. Here, his daytime activities start to catch up with him.

Just like in the movie, the Glasgow people may have particular views on religion, but at the end of the day the overwhelming majority of them will still drink, work and joke together.

Even though this is based in 1975, incidents such as bottle throwing at Old Firm fans is very much still a common thing in Glasgow (I can personally vouch for this having left Celtic Park recently only to be subject to a volley of bottles from a group of neds while walking up Todd Street in the East End).

This film has a great cameo role by Billy Connolly.
