Synopsis

The Countdown - Interactive DVD Game follows the same format as the hit TV game show hosted by Desmond Lynam and Carol Vorderman. On the DVD you can choose to play in single player mode--battling conundrums against the clock--or in a team of one to four, testing your knowledge of numbers and words against family and friends.

You need a Pen and Paper!!?!?

Again... another dreadful Christmas cash in. Like last year's Bullseye, the Countdown DVD offers little in terms of real interactivity. While this is mostly a failing of the hardware (A DVD player can only do so much after all) the game is still a complete rip off.

The one good thing is that at least some money has been spent on getting the hosts to appear (without Susie sadly) and they look like they might have filmed on set.

But that's the end of the good points. Un-responsive controls/choices, a limited number of letter arrangements that can repeat almost straight away... but worst of all... you have to use a pen and paper and a dictionary to play the game...

I didn't buy this, but it was bought as a present by a few of my friends for an after Xmas dinner thing... What a mistake.

Happily, there is an alternative... there's an online version which actually does the show justice... search for wedigtv and you'll see what I mean...and that game if free!

Seriously, give this a miss... keep the DVD for films.

Waste of money

Can't describe how disappointed I was to discover that this bears no resemblence to the actual game, the letters disappear as soon as the clock begins and there is very little feedback about potential words that could have been made. Have only played it twice and rounds are repeating already - have no intention of playing any more. Don't waste your money!!

What a disappointment!

This is a very poor product indeed, probably hastily produced in time for Christmas. I was so looking forward to using it for the first time and waited until all my guests had left, but I felt cheated. Why can the viewer not pick the letters and numbers, why are there very few choices given of words you could have had, but worst of all why do you need pen and paper. I NEVER use this method when watching on TV and find it so much more difficult if the letters are not visible on screen.

One other thing, there should be a contents first page so you can quickly move to the game number you want. I still haven't worked out how to skip the games I've done and twice started game 1. Is this me? Quite honestly though, I don't know whether I can be bothered to try and work it out.

Don't buy this!

Absolute waste of time and money
Review date: 2006-11-06 Rating: 2 out of 10

Fans of the Countdown show will be massively disappointed if they bought this DVD - while those unfamiliar with the game will wonder what on earth is its point, and with good reason.

The charm, purpose, educational value and entertainment of the Countdown show are entirely lost in this most baffling and anachronistic DVD format.

Let's get this straight: you DON'T get to select letters; you need to WRITE DOWN the letters on a PAPER before the 30-second clock begins, as the letters then disappear off the screen for good(!); and after the 30-second countdown you're asked how many letters have you got, after which... the next round begins! I.e., you do not enter your word for verification, nor do you get any possible solutions. Shocking.

The whole notion of playing with a pen and paper while viewing a DVD on a computer is retarded. Honestly, websites using static HTML could have ended up with a better product than this.

There is no Dictionary Corner, no banter between Carol and Des and, in short, there is absolutely nothing about this DVD that resembles a game, a TV show, or Countdown itself.

There is not even style to make up for the lack of substance. The DVD's graphics and design are sloppy and of extremely poor quality.

Whatever you do, just honestly stay away from this product.

Terrible...
Review date: 2006-11-04 Rating: 4 out of 10

The Countdown DVD game which I received for Christmas is so bad I have played it twice. The whole idea of NOT having the letters up on the screen and the terribly scripted parts where there is chat between the pressenters proves that the people who made it have no idea how Countdown works, or maybe they just don't care.

And it wouldn't have been so bad had they taken time on the graphical edge of it. But no, even they are apalling. They don't use the set and the bits inbetween rounds where Des states words that could have been allowed is so brief it gets annoying.

If they ever make a second edition, they should start from scratch and work on a game that would actually be worth buying instead of just rushing to get a rubbish game out for the Christmas rush.
