Not as bad as some may say
Review date: 2008-11-08 Rating: 6 out of 10

I bought this film on a recommendation from a friend, who said it would be one of the scariest film's I'll ever see. Whilst he was wrong in saying it would be the scariest, I think it is one of the most disturbing.

Murder and rape in a film are not, to me, the things that make it so disturbing. It's the sense of the viewer feeling they are actually there, as the film is captured documentary-style, and I feel it works. You actually feel like you too are being captured and tortured, and that you can share the pain of the girls who are in the film. And as for the final scene of the film....it left me numbed by a sense of "wow". For me, it was very powerful, not in a mind-blowing state-of-the-art kind of way (this film certainly shows its age), but almost in an arty, emotional way that builds and builds and then leaves you with a sense of something like relief that the nightmare is over and that something has happened which you just did not expect.

Yes, it's gruesome, and yes it can be disturbing in places (however, by modern standards, it may not be viewed as such by some), but is definately worth a watch if this is your sort of thing. Ok it may not be a testament to Craven's later greatness, but as a first go from a man who "didn't know what he was doing", it works in an unconventional sense.

I recommend it.

Many people claim this film to be something of a cult classic - something on a par with Mean Streets or Evil Dead - as a film from a great director before he sold out and became famous.

Do not be fooled - it is nothing of the sort!

This film has appalling acting, a rubbish plot and an outdated sense of what is shocking. All these are forgivable in a film just as Nosferatu can be forgiven. However, there is something so typically Wes Craven in this film, like the later 'Nightmare on Elm Street's that does things shoddily and 'shockingly' when really they weren't even really bad at the time.

I wish I could say this was a diamond in the rough and, indeed, there are some redeeming qualities in it (the chainsaw bit at the end). Unfortunately its affectatious ways and generally illucid dialogue mean it deserves its non-cult status.

ITS ONLY A MOVIE...ITS ONLY A MOVIE...

This movie was Wes Craven's first movie and what a movie it was, brutal, cruel, evil and sadistic. Shot almost like a documentary with a grindhouse edge this film succeeds in every attempt to make the audience believe what they're seeing. For that reason this movie was banned. The nay-sayers hate it expecting this to be full of porn stars running about with boobies flopping and buckets of gore and a rocking soundtrack NO this is film making at its most honest. This is a horror film with a strong story and one killer of an ending.

This was the worst film I have ever seen in my life don`t waste your money buying it.
I was very dissapointed, after searching for the this film since it came out in the seventies and banned straight away ??????? I can not believe it was banned unless the reason was it was not worth putting on to a disk and selling, utterly utterly garbage about as scary as the Sooty and Sweep show.

Not seen it yet myself

As it was only given a certificate for UK release uncut on 17 March 2008 its unlikely that anyone posting a review has seen the full version.

I will wait for it to be released uncut...

Giving it 3 stars now because I've heard and read good and bad about the film.
