Synopsis
After leaving 'Deep Purple' at the height of their fame, Ritchie Blackmore went on to form Rainbow in 1975, together with vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell. Instantly successful, the band released a string of hit albums up until 1985 when Blackmore left the band to join the reformed Deep Purple. Featured on this DVD is a concert from their European tour in 1977, with the band performing songs from the 'Long Live Rock 'n' Roll' album released later that year.
Sheer perfection

I saw Rainbow 3 weeks after this was recorded at the Rainbow Theatre Finsbury North London. This DVD brings back those treasured memories of seeing one of the world's best rock bands at their peak. Ritchie is an absolute genius, I have seen him play 4 times live but without doubt this is his best performance by far. In Blackmore's night his acoustic guitar work just shows what an accomplished guitarist he is. My only wish 31 years on is that he pairs up with Ronnie James Dio just one more time to play those great classics such as Catch the Rainbow. This is a must buy for any rock fan.

Sheer BrillianceReview date: 2007-12-12 Rating: 10 out of 10Rainbow on DVD. This is as good as it gets. Live Between The Eyes is a good snapshot of the later, pop-rock Rainbow, but this... THIS is what it's really all about.
The circumstances surrounding this gig are legendary, and detailed to some extent in the extras and accompanying booklet. The upshot of it all is that the band is absolutely on fire throughout the performance. If Blackmore didn't always smash his guitar at the end of the show he certainly had a bit of frustration to vent on this night. Most of that energy is channelled into his playing, which is probably beyond description. At the start of Catch The Rainbow Ritchie is slightly out of tune. He retunes quietly while Dio takes centre stage and is ready to come forward for his solo at the right moment; meanwhile Dio, aware of Ritchie tuning, is prepared to improvise over the first instrumental passage if need be. Their commitment to the music is absolute. Cozy Powell's drum solo is a joy to see, and his 1812 Overture is nothing less than classic, bombastic rock'n'roll. (Incidentally, I'm probably not the only guitarist who wanted to play rock'n'roll not because of some guitar hero, but because of Cozy Powell: you just want to be up there in front of that glorious noise!)
The destructive climax of the gig sees Blackmore completely destroying his guitar. It should be noted that, unlike on Live Between The Eyes, this sacrificial guitar is not a cheap copy brought out simply to be smashed. This is a genuine, brand-spanking-new Fender Stratocaster. He's clearly vexed by his time in jail: the violence he treats that guitar with is pretty ferocious. One criticism of this "MKIII" Rainbow is that the sound was heavier, more "metal" than MKII. I suspect that this gig would've sounded like that anyway.
Amongst the extras we get promo videos and interviews with Bob Daisley (bass) and Colin Hart (tour manager), which are excellent. The DVD also comes with a booklet and a facsimile of the original tour program, making for an excellent package. I can't recommend it highly enough.Rainbow - 'Live In Munich, 1977' (Eagle Rock)Review date: 2007-09-22 Rating: 10 out of 10After seeing their memorable live 2-CD box set released time and time again, I didn't expect to see this fabulous live 1977 concert put out on DVD. Good work! Blackmore, Dio and the rest of the crew put on a most professional gig here as you'll see when you watch it for the first time. More than thoroughly enjoyed getting to see {as well as hear} stellar live performances of the powerhouse "Kill The King", "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves", "Man On The Silver Mountain", "Still I'm Sad" and "Do You Close Your Eyes". That revolving lighting rig around the stage totally caught me off guard. Highly recommended. To bad they'll never likely reunite.AWSOMEReview date: 2007-08-12 Rating: 10 out of 10 Already a lot of people commented possitively on this legendary concert. Very worth while having it, very nice extra features like the Bob Daisly interview and the slideshow commentary and off course the magical gig! Blackmore, Dio and Powell at it's best!! Enjoy itBlackmore IS BlackmoreReview date: 2007-05-27 Rating: 10 out of 10He is the reason I sincerely wish I was 20 years older so I could have gone to many of his concerts.Still the very late but welcome DVD releases of Ritchie's career now coming onto the market are an excellent second prize. From the thundering intro of Kill the King to the majestic Mistreated and the mighty Catch The Rainbow are all included here along with great support by Sixteenth century Greensleeves, Long Live Rock And Roll and Still I'm Sad.we are treated to bonus videos of Long Live Rock'n'Roll,Gates Of Babylon and L.A Connection.
In depth interviews are included by bassist Bob Daisley who penned Ozzy Osbournes early albums and Colin Hart which shed fascinating light on the band and Ritchie in particular. The great man plays brilliantly which is even more surprising as we learn he has spent the previous several nights in an Austrian prison.Buy it to find out the whole story.I love it in Kill The King where in his second solo spot he grins(which is a rare thing in itself)almost in defiance of the previous few days and the late concert starting time.He even finds time to throw in complexities of Bach.A timeless classic and in the words of the late great Tommy Vance Ritchie Blackmore is an absolute miracle maker on the guitar I'll drink to that.
