Good Vibes From Joe!
Review date: 2007-11-24 Rating: 8 out of 10
Having greatly enjoyed a concert by Joe Brown and his band, I eagerly purchased this CD after the gig. The performance had been good-natured, enthusiastically delivered and musically versatile. Mr Brown is an underestimated national treasure and his unassuming virtuosity on all manner of stringed instruments including slide guitar and mandolin ensured for an entertaining show. The good vibe is easily and impressively continued on this collection.
The choice of songs is from far and wide, Joe having such a worthy musical history and eclectic tastes himself. The familiar is laced with more obscure selections. The opening fiery funky version of Bob Dylan's "Well, Well, Well" particularly strikes home and Richard Thompson's "Dimming Of The Day" is quietly effective. There's the bluesy "One Trick Pony" (swelled by Jools Holland`s Hammond organ), the down home country of "Uncle Penn" with Joe on fiddle and a marvellous duet with daughter Sam Brown on the Carmichael/Mercer standard, "Lazybones". The original material rolls along nicely. The catchy "Ghost" most memorably making it's subtle point.
All the musicians here play and sing with joyful gusto, stylishly supporting throughout on all the styles this musical journey has to offer. The regular touring band, Neil R Gauntlett, Dave Nilo and Phil Capaldi, all present, are a tight well-honed unit. They are augmented by Dave Peacock on five-string banjo, Mitt Gamon on bass harmonica and Joe's foster son, Richard Newman, who is a fine drummer.
Keeping it in the family, in addition to aforementioned daughter Sam who adds soulful singing to several tracks, son Pete Brown is in charge of production and engineering as well as contributing guitar, mandolin and backing vocals to this diverse and highly entertaining recording. I look forward to more interesting and stimulating work from Joe and his crew.
