I only wish Lee Jones started making movies 20 years ago. I bought this movie 4 years ago, and i have watched it many times. Stone cold classic.

boringReview date: 2008-09-30 Rating: 2 out of 10i dont get why people seem to be giving this film good reviews. nothing happens there is no ending and the old man probably only wanted to die to get out of the film nothing to do with being starving he was just bored.
its not a western of any sort some people seem to think it isA tale of retribution and redemptionReview date: 2008-09-22 Rating: 8 out of 10no problem in loading feelings of intense dislike onto the border patrolman who is central to the plot, or with empathy for the would-be-illegal immigrants that he persecutes. Tammy Lee Jones clearly relishes playing the laconic retributionist evading pursuit whilst engaged in his determined but gruesome quest. plays out well in all areas.Observational character driven masterpieceReview date: 2008-05-31 Rating: 10 out of 10There is a point in this film where one man shoots another accidentally. The terrified perpetrator approaches the dying man, who is lying in the floor twitching, with blood pouring out of his chest, and says "You alright?"
This is a perfect example of the unpredictability of human behaviour that this film explores so well. Sometimes awkwardly funny, sometimes dark, always acutely observed, intelligent and fascinating. All the actors give compelling performances and Tommy Lee Jones' beautifully understated lead role I could watch all day. The narrative has been chopped up and re-arranged in a series of flashbacks; this might cause confusion in other films but in this case the plot is so gentle and natural that it absorbs any sharpness in the narrative structure, and a near perfect balance is achieved. It feels strange awarding 5 stars to something so subtle and seemingly unremarkable, but THREE BURIALS has absolutely achieved what it set out to do artistically whilst remaining very watchable, and that's worthy of the highest merit.Character Driven WesternReview date: 2008-04-01 Rating: 10 out of 10When illegal border jumper Melquiades Estrada (Julio Cedilla) arrives at the Texan ranch belonging to Pete Perkins (Tommy Lee Jones) looking for work, the two men become best friends. One day Melquiades doesn't return to the ranch from working in the desert and eventually his body is discovered by hunters in a shallow grave. The local Sheriff's office isn't too interested in arresting the killer of an illegal alien even though everyone knows border patrolman Mike Norton (Barry Pepper) did it, nor are they interested in informing the dead mans family or giving him a decent burial. Pete Perkins decides to take the law into his own hands and avenge his friends murder, but not before forcing his killer to dig up the body and smuggle it back across the border to be buried in his Mexican home town.
Tommy Lee Jones directs and stars in this poignant and emotional western and he delivers a moving experience. When we meet Melquiades for the first time, he is a corpse but the films fragmented style keeps jumping back in time and we get to know the two men and learn why they are such good friends (Melquiades left his family 5 years ago looking for work and Perkins doesn't have a family). The concentration on character and human emotion is what makes Three Burials great, from the two men, to the border patrolmen battling his guilt to his young wife who hates her new life in Texas. The film is also beautifully shot, making use of the thousands of square miles of barren desert and dusky skies. Overall, Three Burials is a fantastic modern day western that deserves it's place alongside films by Pekinpah and Leone.
