Brilliant humour.
Review date: 2008-08-24 Rating: 10 out of 10

I bought this recently and watched all of the episodes over the course of a couple of weeks; they were fantastic. I remember watching some of them as a child and the lovely Indian sounding comic songs are still a joy to listen to. This is gentle British humour. It centres on the British army in India at the end of the second world war. The story revolves around the armies entertainment troupe. The troupe dress up as women often; the troops they entertain have not seen women in ages and it is considered it would cheer them up to see pretty women on stage. The series is extremely witty, and the Indian bearer character really makes the series; he talks of his fellow Indians as being 'damn natives' and he as being 'we British'. However, the humour is probably a little racially naive for today's more enlightened audience. The sergeant 'shut up' constantly insults all of the troupe, in his efforts to make soldiers out of them and get them posted 'up the jungle' and the officers must constantly defend the entertainment troupe.
