Actually rather boring
Review date: 2008-01-27 Rating: 4 out of 10

I had great expectations for Favela - based on all the positive reviews. I'm sorry to say though it didn't impress. Sure the man it was loosely about had made some great strides forward in improving conditions in a crazy society, but the way the documentary was done just didn't hold my interest. it would have been better as a 1/2 hour TV documentary.

Magnificet positive about hope in favelas

This documentary is great, you can see how just only one person can make a difference. That everything is in your mind. How many people say, Oh! I can not do this or that! I am just one person! if you are one of these, WATCH THIS FILM!!!! Even in the worst place that you can live your mind can make a difference. I am glad to have watched this film so full of hope, sometimes we have to reache the bottom to gain impulse. Maybe we live a life so comfortable that we have lost the power to fight and make a difference in our own community, life is to easy here and we become dull. I think thaks for the troubles of the life people become who they are and we have to learn a lot about them. WATCH IT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO REGREAT IT.

Inspirational Gruesome and Incredible Music
Review date: 2006-06-08 Rating: 10 out of 10

This film is set in one of the hundreds of favelas in Rio. It tells the story of one of the inhabitants Anderson Sa. Crime and drug dealing make his favela an unpleasant place for the majority of law abiding citizens who work hard to barely scrape a living. Anderson was once a drug dealer who realises that his life expectancy will be limited if he continues in this line of work. The turning point comes when there is a particularly bloody slaughter of innocent citizens at the hands of the police who have little regard for their status. Police corruption is rife. Anderson then embarks on a new existance, encouraging others involved at the bottom line of the drugs trade to extract themselves from this lifestyle and put their time and energies into music projects and arts groups. There is a particularly telling scene when he tries to encourage a young boy from going into the drugs trade. The music throughout the film is sensational and makes you want to get up and dance. This is a very humbling yet empowering piece of work which makes one question one's own life and priorities. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who loves latin beats and african drums and who has any interest in community projects. We can all learn a lot from this film.
