Thought provoking series.Review date: 2007-06-09 Rating: 10 out of 10I am a huge Alfred Burke fan and only bought this boxset because he headed the cast. However I have been more than impressed with the episodes included in this set.
The series revolves around the German occupation of the Channel Islands in World War II and the uneasy relationship between the invaders and the Islanders. This relationship is personalised for us in the exchanges between Dr. Martel (Bernard Horsfall) of the civil liasion committee and Major Richter (Alfred Burke)the Commanding German officer. We are also made aware of tensions within the respective sides of the divide. Dr Martel's daughter Clare (Emily Richards) is unhappy that her father has seen fit to serve on the civil liasion committee, viewing it as collaboration with the enemy. Major Richter has his own problems with Hauptsturmfuhrer Reinicke (Simon Cadell) of the Waffen SS. Richter knows only too well that Reinicke is really a spy for his SS masters in Berlin and yet has to try and work with him as best he can. There are some thought provoking episodes in this series such as 'After the Ball' and 'The Jerrybag'. These two episodes deal with the taboo of relationships between German soldiers and local women and the dire consequences for some of the individuals involved. Other subjects touched upon are the black market in which locals and occupiers alike buck the system to make a profit; treason involving a German general and a plot to topple Hitler; as well as depicting the inevitable privations of war.
With fine performances from Alfred Burke and Bernard Horsfall, I must also mention John Malcolm who is marvellous as the pragmatic 'detective' Oberleutnant Kluge. Knowing Simon Cadell only as Jeffrey Fairbrother in his appearances in Hi-De-Hi (who he was to play 2 years later) it was difficult at first to accept him as a cold calculating SS officer but he managed to convince me.
Making guest appearances are Joss Ackland, John Nettles, Alun Armstrong and Anthony Head.
I thoroughly recommend this series, it is a quality production.
