slightly plodding film, but redeemed by cagney.
Review date: 2006-10-11 Rating: 6 out of 10
this film started quite promisingly, but then suddenly slowed down and then picked up. rather an uneven film but still has good scenes.
james cagney simply steals the film with another riveting performance but with a different style as well.this time, he isn't quite so keen to get involved in any shady dealings.(i would have thought he'd have enough on his mind with trying to prove his innocence)
there is certainly a gritty, uncompromising atmosphere, especially in the prison scenes; corrupt prison officials, mentally unbalanced convicts.who wants to do time?
teaming up cagney with george raft was a good move. they work well together. a shame raft didn't make it to the A list of stars; not the best actor i've seen, but good enough.
it's about 35 minutes into the film when the pace grounds to a halt, but stick with it because the brilliant finish more than compensates; guns, grenades, riots etc. worth the wait.
the part that didn't quite work, is when raft escapes and then suddenly decides to help cagney; sorry, but i can't see that happening if it were real life.
the solving of the mystery was rather convient to say the least. how come the warden believes cagney's innocence just like that?
this isn't vintage cagney, but worth collecting if you are a devout cagney follower like me.
