Living life without a blue print
Review date: 2008-08-20 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is one movie I cannot rate highly enough, Colin Farrell's Bobby is one of the most beautiful creations (inside and out) in film today. A tragically beautiful movie about creating a family that you want - and if a desire is there you will create a home at the end of the world. Beautifully shot with stellar acting and a moving soundtrack it gives us a glimpse of what the human soul is capable of when it truly loves someone.

Forget the film - read the novel
Review date: 2007-08-16 Rating: 2 out of 10

I have read the superb novel on which this film is based several times and, while I know films rarely live up to the novels on which they are based, mostly due to time constraints, this still came as a real disappointment. Whole important parts of the plot are left out, and the exploration of the central three characters' relationship and how it, and they, change over the years, felt hurried and unsatisfactory.

Granted, it is hard to see how the technique used in the novel of telling the story from the different characters' viewpoints could have easily translated to the screen, but this is one of the things which makes the novel so different and interesting. There, the inner life of the characters is explored: the film does not even attempt this. Perhaps an unseen narrator's voice could have helped here.

A good cast of actors felt sadly underused, in particular Sissy Spacek as Jonathan Glover's mother, who I thought the most interesting and complex character in the novel. How much she would have brought to the role if it had been properly fleshed out.

For me this film had the feel of hurriedly trying to cash in on the works of this excellent writer after the success of 'The Hours'.

Great Movie.

This film was surprisingly great!! I read the title information and didn't think it sounded that great but with C. Farrell in it thought i'd give it a chance. All actors are amazing was on the edge of my seat! Very heart-felt towards the end. Overall Good Movie!!

Masterfully created Soap
Review date: 2007-02-14 Rating: 10 out of 10

A well crafted film. I watched with delight and sadness and will see it again and again. C Farell's character is a little too good to be true, but yet he was stoned most of the time. A brave American journey into gay scene. Acting is superb. A treat for a sentimental soul. Get a paper tissue ready.Sissy Spacek is superb so is everything else except the story line. A little naive or simple lacks drama. However it does not distract from the overall good impression.

search for an alternative kind of family
Review date: 2006-06-10 Rating: 10 out of 10

Bobby experiences an early loss of his beloved brother, but inherits his lust for a take it easy approach to life. At high school he meets Jonathan with whom he joins in a kind of loving alternative lifestyle. Soon he is integretated in his family, later they meet again at New York City.
Who liked "The Hours" of Micheal Cunningham very much, this movie is the easy going alternative. The movie revolves around the relationsships of a limited number of people, which are driven by deep interest in each other, sexually, emotionally and like a family. It's not about the usual boring reactions of parents or stress in relationsships. This movie surprises by its approach more than once.
