Black Comedy? Racial Satire? Twisted love story? You decide!

I came across this rare, underground classic completely by accident, i have to admit. I bought it in a double pack dvd along with ''Fight For Your Life'' purely because it was cheaper to get a hold of the latter that way. Writer/director Larry Cohen is well known for his contributions to the explotation genre whether it be through horrors, or gritty thrillers, so I thought that i knew what i was going to get with this picture. More fool me.

''Bone'' is quite unlike any other film i've ever seen, purely for the fact that it doesn't seem to know what genre it is itself. This gives the film a certain charm, because in my opinion, it doesn't need to be lumped into any. This film is in a class of its own.

The film begins with a seemingly wealthy white couple lounging around in their spacious, luxurious garden, when a black man invades their home demanding money. When he finds that there is no money in the house, he orders the husband to go to the bank, clean out his account, and return with $5000 in cash, or else his wife will be raped and her throat cut. The husband sets off on his task, but it soon becomes clear that he might not be all that interested in saving his wife, while back at the house, she develops a very strange relationship with her overbearing captor Bone.

I wont delve into the plot too much, because i feel as if i won't be able to do it justice. Suffice to say that the story becomes more abstract and bizarre as the film progresses, and by the end, you won't really be sure what has just unfolded.

Is Bone merely a figment of the wife's imagination? Is the wife merely a figment of Bone's imagination? I'm not sure, and to be honest, it doesn't matter.

If you like a thought provoking movie that will ask more questions than it answers, whilst delivering a biting satire at the same time, you should definately see ''Bone''.

A very surprising, refreshing little movie, that will make you laugh and make you think as long as you understand and appreciate the blackest of comedies.

No pun intended
