screen great Stewart rides again and again Review date: 2007-05-22 Rating: 8 out of 10 James Stewart was a versatile performer during his long illustrious carrier he acted in genres as diverse as screwball comedies the Philadelphia story , suspense ,Rear window and the everyman triumph over adversity Mr. smith goes to Washington all of these areas were mastered to great commercial success thus making him one of the most versatile actors of his era in terms of commercial success.
Here the Stewart per sona effortlessly strolls into another of the popular genres of his day the western, he made most of his western's during the middle of his carrier
He made a string of westerns following Broken Arrow and there after started to explore darker themes in this expreisve genre with his strong challenging body of work with Anthony Mann which started with Winchester 73 a body of work which could be considered Stewarts artistic high.
The film's here contrast in mood and theme in Destry, 1939 Stewart is fresh faced and eager in a hail of quick fire dialogue and the biting tough talk of Mae West the film is enjoyable at a superficial level as well as making some dark pronouncements on the ulitmate weakness of humanity.
The man from Laramie 1955 over fifteen years and several films' later is an altogether darker somber affair with an overriding melody of tragedy. Fatigue and aged and his features harder his hair graying now a man with a bloodthirsty purpose. Miles from the young kid with a positive goal (Destry ride again)
He portrays an avenging cowboy on the trial of his brother's killers with effective vulnerability and sincere anger.
Shenandoah 1965 is perhaps Stewarts most moving performance if it were made today it would have Oscar nomination written all over some sweeping cinematography and moving performances make this probing and believable film effective and moving viewing Stewart tackles the role in his trademark cool honest manner and does not power act or look for loud delivery of big lines if this type of film was made today one can imagine Mel Gibson in the role making it an all together more contrived cynical and overbearing piece of comercal cinema.
I have not viewed two rode together so can not comment however this set is a bargain at the current prices and is worth getting for the other three alone.
If you enjoyed Rio Bravo or High noon you'll enjoy destry rides again if you liked Clint Eastwood's unforgiven you'll find the Man from laramire a satasying drama and if you liked the patriot or have an interest in American history you will be intrigued and moved by Shenandoah
