Amazon.co.uk Review

Three months before the much-publicized theatrical release of United 93, the same true-life tragedy was faithfully dramatized in Flight 93, an equally praiseworthy TV movie that was originally broadcast on the A&E network in the US on January 30, 2006. The fourth plane to be hijacked on September 11th, 2001--and the only plane that didn't reach its intended terrorist target--is the riveting subject of this film, which unfolds in real-time (similar but not identical to United 93), beginning with the terrorists' preparations and boarding of the ill-fated flight. We then follow the notorious events as they unfold, and from that moment on, it's nearly impossible to take your eyes off the screen. The intense drama focuses on the passengers who ultimately thwarted the terrorists--they include Tom Burnett (Jeffrey Nordling), Todd Beamer (Brennan Elliot), and Mark Bingham (Ty Olsson)--but as their counter-attack plans are being made, the action also reveals the chaotic nature of the ground response, from the White House bunker (where Vice President Cheney was moved for security) to Offices of the Federal Aviation Agency, Verizon headquarters (where in-flight calls were monitored), and United Airlines flight control, where pilots and terrorists alike could be heard throughout the terrible ordeal of the hijacking.

To his credit, director Peter Markle steers clear from any sense of exploitation (it helps that there was a five-year gap between the 9/11 tragedy and this respectable film); furthermore, both Markle and screenwriter Nevin Schreiner avoid the pitfalls of melodrama by keeping the action rooted in the facts as we know them. Speculation is necessary for some of the dramatic details, but Flight 93 benefits from a well-chosen cast of unknowns, which enhances our belief in them as ordinary citizens under extraordinary circumstances. As you might expect, several scenes are inherently unforgettable (up to and including the now heroic phrase "Let's roll!" as the counter-attack begins), and the authentically played emotions are further intensified by realistic special effects by Gary Gutierrez, who performed similarly laudable duties on The Right Stuff 23 years earlier, at the start of his visual effects career. Produced with the cooperation of surviving family members of those who perished on Flight 93, this well-made TV film handles difficult material with grace under pressure, and that alone serves as an admirable tribute to those brave passengers who gave their lives so that others could be saved. --Jeff Shannon

An honest perspective...
Review date: 2008-11-11 Rating: 8 out of 10

To be fair if people were expecting high, octane drama they were looking in the wrong places, this film is about an honest, humane insight into how these passengers dealt with their harrowing situation in the most bravest possible manner, had this film been over the top and effusive with effects and dialogue it would have been a serious let down.

The fact these actors are unknown adds more reality to the film itself, somehow I dont see any well known actor from this day and age bringing any sort of 'humanity' into it, it would have been nothing short of a joke otherwise, the acting was fantastic and well rounded by actors without the 'public notoriety'that surrounds the usual bunch...

The film was intense and gripping from start to finish, towards the end when they all grouped together and made a dash for the cockpit I was thinking 'Come on!!!! stop them you can do this'! and I already knew what was going to happen, yet was still 'ROOTING' for them.

The directors, producers and actors created a 'humane, brave film, that isnt glossed over with the usual Hollywood' varnish.
I also admire the actors for actually putting themselves forward to replicate the events of 9/11, it cannot have been easy for them, and the real families of the horror of that day.

For a true, honest account of the events of that day Flight 93 is the one to watch, if you want facts without the fiction, this is worth it in your collection.

Not a bad movie
Review date: 2007-04-13 Rating: 8 out of 10

I'm rating this inbetween because it wasnt brilliant, neither great. I thought the story was rather sad as it made me remember what happened back in 2001. This movie has some obvious let downs inside it, not big, but things that could have made the movie that bit better!
I am mainly refferring to the acting because i personally didnt think it was that great. The reactions/expressions werent very shocking from the passengers when they realized a few terrorists were controlling the plane. Also, the pace was another let down i thought. However, i stil enjoyed this, its worth watching, but i do think there are some letdowns here.

Flight 93 and the Conspiracy Theories
Review date: 2007-03-09 Rating: 8 out of 10

Flight 93 is a well-crafted piece of docu-drama, carefully handled in order not to increase the agony of the families of the victims of flight United 93. It sensibly stays clear of any wild speculations and concentrates on what the film makers pieced together from the evidence they were able to obtain.

I am aware that conspiracy theories regarding 9/11 abound on both sides of the Atlantic, most of them concerning United Flight 93. It remains unclear whether it was shot down or downed by the passengers, but to idly speculate that this sensitively handled film, based on many witness reports, is nothing but a Government propaganda lie, seems to me utterly reprehensible. Too many people would have had to have their arms twisted to all come up with false witness.

It is extremely unfeeling towards the relatives of the unfortunate victims to maintain, that the events of 9/11 didn't actually take place and that the entire 9/11 disaster was a CIA masterminded plot to justify George Dubya Bush's ill-fated invasion of Iraq. The terror acts committed that day were used by him in the most callous form, of that there is no doubt, the terrorists played right into his hands, but please leave your wild speculations out of the reviews pages. If you didn't like the film, say so but don't insult those who were involved.

If you want the truth, look elsewhere
Review date: 2007-03-03 Rating: 2 out of 10

Okay, I'll get straight to the point. The official 'facts' surrounding the last minutes of Flight 93 and the other planes hijacked on 9/11 make no sense. If this film was an attempt to give us the truth, then it falls woefully short.

When the practically indestructible black box flight recorders 'turn up' and their contents are revealed, only then will we be in a position to decide what really happened that day. Until then, fundamentally flawed films like this will continue to be made to bolster the 'official' version of events.

They might as well have got Disney in to make this film, for what factual content it contains.

Watch this film (or the more recent big budget affair) if you must, but take the whole thing with a very large pinch of salt. I take no pleasure from writing this review, believe me.
